Research Assistant/Associate in Generation Integrated Energy Storage (Fixed Term) University of Cambridge, Department of Engineering

Research Assistant/Associate in Generation Integrated Energy Storage (Fixed Term)

A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on thermodynamic and other technical aspects of a range of energy storage technologies. The project is part of a larger, collaborative project entitled 'Grid Integrated Energy Storage (GIES) - A Paradigm Shift', led by Nottingham University and involving Leeds, Birmingham and Cambridge Universities. This consortium also has links to various industrial partners - such as Rolls Royce, EDF, National Grid and Highview - and other academic institutions worldwide. The concept of GIES challenges the conventional view of 'standalone' electricity storage devices and, as the name suggests, incorporates storage into the electricity generation process, thereby reducing the number of inefficient energy transformations and obviating the need for additional, costly power conversion equipment. The overarching aim is to determine what role will be played by GIES systems in future energy infrastructure, and to set out what fundamentals are required for these systems to be successful in both technical and economic terms. The component of this project that will be based in Central Cambridge focuses on thermodynamic (and other engineering) analysis of energy storage and energy delivery systems.
