Job description

Topic of research: Fundamentals in the adhesion of PVD ZnMg-coatings for the next generation steels.

The STW HTM research project “Fundamentals in the Adhesion of Physical Vapour Deposited (PVD) ZnMg-coatings for the Next Generation Steels (NGS)” is driven by the desire of Tata Steel Europe to develop PVD continuously coated strip as a breakthrough technology for depositing anti-corrosion ZnMg coatings on NGS strip. It aims at understanding how the adhesion property of PVD ZnMg coatings on NGS is influenced by the PVD process including the subsequent thermal processes, and by the chemical composition and microstructure of the coating and substrates. These parameters will be used to predict the mechanical performance of substrate-coating systems during subsequent thermal and forming operations by micromechanical simulations. The ultimate goal is to solve the adhesion problem of novel PVD ZnMg-based multilayer coated NGS by optimizing the coating design and interface structure, and enhancing interfacial bonding strength.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a PhD degree in materials science and engineering. A strong background in metallurgy, physical vapour deposition processes, transmission electron microscopy will be a clear advantage. The successful candidate is expected to have an excellent academic record and is curious, creative and ambitious. You should be able to work in a multidisciplinary environment in close cooperation with other experts and be proficient in English (both oral and written).

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers depending on qualifications and work experience a minimum salary of € 3,111 (scale 10.4 Dutch Universities) up to a maximum salary of € 4,084 gross per month on a full-time basis (Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities). The successful candidate will first be offered a temporary position of one year with the option of renewal for another one year and four months. Prolongation of the contract is contingent on sufficient progress in the first year.

The preferred starting date is 1 October 2017.
