The Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of TTÜ invites applications for the Professor of Building Information Modelling (BIM) position in the Building Lifecycle Research Group. The position is planned for a professor in order to complement the existing research competence of Building Lifecycle Research Group. The candidate is required to have significant experience in leading research teams at the national and international levels in BIM and ICT in Construction or closely related fields.


The candidate’s main responsibility will encompass leading and conducting world-class activities in research and teaching in the selected areas of building information modelling. Depending on the expertise of the candidate, the preferable research areas are:

- BIM in construction management;
- ICT in construction;
- Big data analytics;
- BIM at different stages of building lifecycle.


Additionally, the BIM Professor will be responsible for the following tasks:

- Integrating BIM to the courses of the Structural Engineering and Construction Management curriculum (i.e. courses of Building Technology, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Facilities Management, Structural Design etc.);
- Formulating the BIM research main focuses in accordance with the overall development plan of Building Lifecycle Research Group and conducting multi-disciplinary and collaborative research;
- Reaching out to the wider community – academia as well as industry, compile project proposals and support and lead joint grant writing activities incl. Horizon 2020 and other EU funding schemes;
- Mentoring PhD students in the research team and supervising Master theses of the students.


Requirements for the candidate


The required qualifications for a professor position at TTÜ include a PhD or an equivalent degree in an area that is relevant for the position. Qualified candidates are expected to have an excellent research record and very good teaching skills. The high quality of the candidate’s research should be demonstrated by publications in high-level international peer-reviewed journals and/or full papers in published conference proceedings. Desired skills include experience in initiating and supervising research projects, experience in cooperation with industry and other research institutions, experience in managing scientific teams and planning research projects and successful supervising of PhD students.


More specifically, the following experience is required for the advertised BIM professor position:


- Strong scientific background and international reputation (level of professional accomplishment in research, teaching, and service that merits appointment as a tenured Professor or a tenured Associate Professor in Building Lifecycle Research Group;
- International reputation with experience in one or more of the following areas: building information modelling, ICT in construction, construction management (publications in high-level international peer-reviewed journals and successful supervision of at least 4 PhD theses, incl. at least one over last 3 years;
- Previous experience in formulating and managing research teams;
- Coordination of international research projects (e.g. EU framework programs), the applicant has to be an expert at managing and leading research projects;
- Experience in planning new research projects;
- Experience with industrial applications and technology transfer.


The BIM Professor shall formulate an independent activity within Building Lifecycle Research Group. The salary conditions will be negotiated depending on the candidate’s qualification.

Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture with personnel of about 130 and more than 1,000 students covers all areas of construction sciences and is responsible for civil engineering higher education in Estonia. Department consist of 8 research groups and 7 laboratories which operate in structural engineering, structural mechanics, construction management, building materials, energy performance, building service systems, building physics, road engineering, geodesy, wave engineering, water and environmental engineering, and architecture and city planning areas. Being one of largest the department represents the oldest faculty of TTÜ founded in 1918 and has a glorifying heritage with many outstanding achievements in Estonian and international scale. The department is known from particularly impressive achievements in the research of spatial structures, which have enabled to erect unique suspension roofs, reinforced and timber shells and plywood structures, as well as building materials and energy performance. Iconic buildings where these achievements have been applied are the restoration of the National Opera House, the choir stands of the Song Festival Grounds in Tallinn and
Tartu, facilities of the 1980 Olympic Regatta, Tallinn TV Tower, and a recent restoration of the world’s first shell structures – Tallinn seaplane harbor hangars.


The Building Lifecycle Research Group is one of the eight research groups in the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture and one of the leading units responsible of the structural Engineering and Construction Management curriculum. The research of the group reflects the building lifecycle as a whole, integrating the construction process and its outcomes with management strategies, technologies and materials used and also with economics and facilities management. Recent research has included: multi-attribute decision making methods for the assessment of different management strategies; different aspects of construction economics and management in the major fields of civil engineering and building materials; surveys on the building life cycle and technical conditions of housing; disaster resilience of built environment; educational aspects of civil engineering, regulation of construction activities and creation of normative materials and standards for the Estonian construction industry.
