The School of Engineering and the Department of Materials and Environmental Technology at Tallinn University of Technology (TTÜ) located in Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia, invites applications for the academic position Professor of Water and Environment Technology in the Laboratory of Environmental Technology. The Department of Materials and Environmental Technology is a new academic unit established on 1 January 2017 on the basis of the former Faculty of Chemical and Materials Technology. The School of Engineering is the biggest School of Tallinn University of Technology. The candidate has to have significant skills and international experience in the field of environmental technology and/or closely related fields. The academic staff of the Laboratory of Environmental Technology has long-term successful experience in the studies on environmental application of advanced chemical oxidation including the photocatalytic processes and ozone based technologies.


The objective of the professorship to be established at Tallinn University of Technology is to bring high-level research expertise in the field of environmental technology to the institution and achieve international visibility by means of initiation of intensified cooperation with leading European research and development organisations, launching development projects with the respective Estonian and European organisations in charge of the field, and enhancing output in acquiring EU research funding. The primary research areas should embrace treatment technologies for water, air and soil including the subfields like chemical oxidation and gas-phase pulsed corona discharge.


Work assignments


• Full-time balanced teaching, research and development activities;
• Creation of novel scientific knowledge, management of research projects;
• Successful application for research and application grants;
• Development of water and air treatment processes including pulsed corona discharge-based technologies, study of the pathways and mechanisms;
• Upscaling of the treatment systems and their improvement and implementation in cooperation with the enterprises in Estonia and EU;
• Leading cooperation and contracts with enterprises.


Additionally, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following tasks:


• Classroom teaching in the field of environmental technology using modern methodological and educational approaches in accordance with the regulations set by Tallinn University of Technology;
• Publishing the results of research projects in high-level international peer-reviewed journals;
• Presentation of the results of research studies at international scientific conferences and seminars;
• Education of the next generation of academic personnel including mentoring and supervising of PhD and MSc students at the Department of Materials and Environmental Technology.


Requirements for the candidate:


PhD or an equivalent degree in environmental technology or in an area that is relevant for the position, at least 10 years’ experience in managing scientific teams and planning research projects. Strong scientific background and international working experience in water and environmental technology. Experience in the fields of advanced chemical oxidation and pulsed corona discharge-based technologies, supervision of at least five PhD theses, publications in high-level international peer-reviewed journals.

The strength of the Department is internationally distinguished scientific research in the area of material science and environmental technology. The main research areas of the department are related but not limited to chemistry, physics and materials technology and developing of new sustainable technologies for the preparation of materials as well as environmental application of novel technologies. The current research topic of the Laboratory of Environmental Technology is mainly focused on the removal of emerging pollutants in water, wastewater and soil. The department is equipped with contemporary measurement and test apparatus and necessary experimental setups for the research. The Department is involved in running of study programmes at bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral level.
