Introduction

INL is seeking a qualified, self-motivated Junior Fellow to work on a R&D project in collaboration with other Research Institutions for the development of functional food ingredients from food wastes for food analysis at the Department of Health, Food and Environment.

 

Job Role & Key Responsibilities

As a Junior Fellow in the Food Processing research team you will take on a key role within the development of new encapsulation systems to enhance bioactivity and improve the bioavailability of functional food ingredients.

The Junior Fellow will develop micro and nano encapsulation devices based on food grade biopolymers using different technologies, among others: coacervation, vibrational spray-dryer, electrospray or microfluidics.

The successful candidate will work in in the development of new packaging systems as well as study how the nanostructure of food ingredients affects the properties of supramolecular and macroscopic food structures in relation to the hedonic characteristics of food and its functional properties and health benefits

 

Job Requirements

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • PhD in Biotechnology, Food Science and Technology or related area;
  • Experience in some of the following areas: production/extraction of food grade bioactive compounds or biopolymers, micro and nanoencapsulation, assessment of in vitro bioactivity (e.g. antioxidant, antihypertensive or antimicrobial) and physical and chemical characterization techniques (Z-sizer, size exclusion chromatography, rheology);
  • Experience in the supervision (or co-supervision) of post-graduate students (e.g. MSc).

 

Personal Skills

  • Strong motivation to work both independently and as part of a team in an interdisciplinary environment, with the ability to pay close attention to detail and to meet deadlines;
  • Excellent communication skills and experience in the dissemination of results to the scientific community are expected;
  • Capable of establishing collaborative ties with distinguished academic groups and relevant industry partners;
  • Fluency in English.

 

Languages

  • English is the working language of INL. Therefore, excellent communication skills in English are required.
