Research Associate in Thermochromic Coating and Nanoparticle Synthesis for Smart Window Applications

Full Time

Salary: UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £34,635 - £41,864 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

We wish to recruit a Research Associate with a background in Chemistry and Materials Science from October 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter, to work in the photonic innovations lab at UCL on the ERC starting grant, Intel Glazing.

The latest forecast by the International Energy Agency predicts that the CO2 emissions from the built environment will reach 15.2 Gt in 2050, double their 2007 levels. Buildings consume 40% of the primary energy in developed countries with heating and cooling alone accounting for 63% of the energy spent indoors. The objective of Intel Glazing is to develop intelligent window insulation technologies using sustainable raw materials.

The developed technologies will adjust the amount of radiation escaping or entering a window depending upon the ambient environmental conditions and will be capable of delivering unprecedented reductions to the energy needed for regulating the temperature in commercial and residential buildings.

The Research Associate will be responsible for the synthesis of metal-organic precursors and their modification using air-free synthesis techniques. Moreover, the RA will be working on the deposition of vanadium dioxide (VO2) thermochromic coatings on glass substrates and the fabrication of multilayer systems (TiO2, SiO2, Al2O3 and other) by using a variety of techniques, including sol-gel, spin-coating, Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) and Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD). In addition, the Research Associate will be responsible for the fabrication of VO2 nanoparticles (<50nm) and their integration in appropriate polymer host materials. Finally, the RA will be working on the fabrication of core-shell and hollow metal-oxide nanoparticles and their surface modification.

The post is available for 2 years in the first instance; further funding to support the post may be available.

Applicants should have a PhD (or about to submit) or working experience in a relevant area of metal-oxide coating synthesis and/or nanoparticle synthesis. A first degree in a chemical, materials or physical sciences subject is also an essential requirement as is experience in at least two of the following three areas; i) metal-organic precursor synthesis, ii) thin-film deposition; iii) nanoparticle fabrication and incorporation in polymer hosts.

Applicants should also have the ability to present technical information effectively to a range of audiences as well as the ability to analyse and write up data in the form of journal papers and reports.

Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be made at Research Assistant Grade 6B (Salary 30,316 - £31,967 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis (including corrections)
