The vacancy is within the spearheading "Manufacturing Engineering and Systems" of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Quality Assurance Test Line of Campus Group T - Sustainable Engineering. The department is a leader in Europe in this field, has acquired a unique research infrastructure over the years and is involved in a large number of research projects. In addition, complementary expertise is available around production techniques, mechanical engineering and automation. In addition, the department is strongly associated with the university's valorisation services and research institutes for technology transfer at Flemish and European level. The department is particularly active in spin-off creation, which illustrates the socio-economic relevance of the research.

The education is mainly provided within Campus Group T of the Faculty of Industrial Engineering. This faculty is new, launched on October 1, 2013, and has a multicamp model. Campus Groep T is an internationally oriented campus with both Dutch and English bachelor, master's and doctoral programs in Industrial Engineering. Every year more than 1800 engineering students study at this campus.

Assignment

Research

Modern products demand production techniques with increased complexity, increasingly smaller tolerances and with functional surface structures. This leads to growing challenges regarding the development of new metrology concepts that allow robust, traceable measurements and quality control. Examples of such new challenges include complex internal structures made by additive manufacturing, and micro-elements with tolerances in the nano range. In addition, there is a need for higher productivity for high-speed measurement techniques as well as portable and traceable in-process metrology. The proposed research will therefore focus on dimensional and surface metrology of complex components, such as micro-components, additive fabricated workpieces, and sheet metal parts using advanced and multi-sensor systems. The research will also focus on traceable in-process measurements that enable real-time monitoring of dimensional and / or surface quality during processing. In addition to the expansion of the research, attention should also be paid to strengthening and expanding current cooperation with the regional and international manufacturing industry.
  • You are expected to develop and direct a research program of international level within one or more application domains of dimensional and surface metrology. In addition, you enter into dialogue with industry, both regional and international, and strive for effective collaboration for future developments in your expertise domain.
  • You work closely with the current members of the Campus Group T, the Department of Mechanics, as well as with the researchers in other departments and at the different locations of the KU Leuven, in order to contribute to a research and development infrastructure with service to society and to the (Flemish and international) industry.
  • You are able to acquire competitive financing.
  • You publish on the highest scientific level, acquires resources for fundamental and applied industrial research, builds international cooperation and supervises doctorates from international level.
  • You pay close attention to the valorisation for government and business in applied research.

Education

You provide high-quality education in the field of measurement technology, production and mechanical engineering, with a clear commitment to the quality and profile of the education as a whole. You also contribute to the pedagogical project of the Faculty of Industrial Engineering through the supervision of master's theses and as promoter of doctoral students. The education activities mainly take place within the faculty's programs and at one or more of the locations, but mainly at the location of Leuven. You develop your education according to KU Leuven's vision of activation and research-based education and utilizes the opportunities for educational professionalization offered by the faculty and the university.

Services

You are willing to provide scientific, social and internal services, with particular attention to service to the industry.

Requirements

You have a diploma of doctor in industrial science or engineering mechanics or equivalent degree with specialization in metrology or related discipline.

You have a strong research file. Research quality is evident from publications in leading international magazines and conferences, as well as international research experience. Leading experience in one or more companies can illustrate your valorization focus, and is therefore recommended.

You have proven qualities for academic education. Educational experience is an important plus. International experience and / or industrial experience are also an important plus.

You have organizational skills and you have been set up collectively. You also possess outstanding leadership skills that can be valorized in a university context. You are willing to give guidance to the research groups and educational activities at a location of the KU Leuven.

A good knowledge of English is a requirement.

The governing language of the KU Leuven is Dutch. If you have no or insufficient Dutch knowledge, the KU Leuven provides a training offer that you must allow to participate in board meetings.
