Academic Vacancy for Machine Building, Automatization and Process Control in the Nutrition and Color Industry KU Leuven, Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering

MACHINE BUILDING, AUTOMATIZATION AND PROCESS CONTROL IN THE NUTRITION AND COLOR INDUSTRY

(Ref. ZAP-2017-46)

Employment: Full time

City: Yellow

Apply until: 15/01/2018

Machine construction, automation and process control in the food industry and pharmaceutical industry are becoming increasingly important for ensuring sustainable and at the same time quality production. In addition, specific sectors are required in these sectors that require their own approach. In the food industry this is due to the large variability of the raw materials and products as well as the specific physicochemical characteristics of foodstuffs. The Scientific and Technological Group, Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Leuven Technology Campus Geel, has a full-time academic vacancy in the independent academic staff in the field of machine construction, automation and process control for the food industry and pharmaceutical industry.

MACHINE BUILDING, AUTOMATIZATION AND PROCESS CONTROL IN THE NUTRITION AND COLOR INDUSTRY

This profile vacancy is located in the Technology Cluster of Mechanical Engineering Engineering at the Geel Technology Campus. The Department of Mechanics and the Research Group will strategically develop industrial-oriented scientific research in the field of food industry and agriculture and horticulture. The campus already boasts 10 years of experience with practice-based research and service (both regional and European). The research to be strengthened will further strengthen the campus's position in this field and will further valorize in these and related sectors (such as the pharmaceutical and process industries).

The Technology Cluster Mechanical Industrial Engineering Techniques is embedded in the Department of Mechanics. The department's research focuses on the major societal challenges facing our society and the department is therefore involved in a large number of research projects and is strongly associated with the university's valorisation services and with research institutes for technology transfer in Flemish and European level.

Assignment

Research

Your research focuses on advanced engineering engineering (machining, automation and process control) specifically for applications in the food industry, with expansion to the pharmaceutical industry. This research should therefore pay particular attention to the specific characteristics of these domains:

  • Extreme hygiene, easy cleaning and maintenance requirements for machines;
  • Large variability of raw materials and products and the need to respond flexibly here;
  • Typical material properties (viscoelastic solids, non-newtonian fluids, ...) and often high product vulnerability.

We are looking for a senior profile to start and apply the applied mechanical research in this field and build on Geel campus. There will be at least one additional junior profile in the near future for this domain.

Expectations:
  • You develop activities of focused scientific research that result in doctorates and publications that comply with international standards and which lead to wide international recognition.
  • You support or initiate a network of companies by valorizing research results and performing industrial services with the aim of enhancing industrial innovation.
  • You work around your research program an international partnership, both in academia and with industrial partners.
  • You work closely with the members of the Technology Campus Geel and the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
  • You are able to competitively obtain both project-based government funding and bilateral industrial financing
  • You aim for excellence in your research and thus contribute to the further development of the technology campus and the department.
  • You pay close attention to the valorisation for government and business in applied research.

Education

The training programs of the Faculty of Industrial Engineering are aimed at educating engineers with a strong focus on industry-oriented technological development.

The education assignment is based in the bachelor of industrial sciences, the master of industrial sciences: electromechanics and the master of industrial sciences: energy, mainly on the Geel Technology Campus. This education assignment includes courses in the fields of mechanical design, control and control technology and automation. You also contribute to the pedagogical project of the faculty and the university through the guidance of students in the field of bachelor and master's degrees and as PhD promoter. Other technology campuses can also use your expertise to provide education.

You develop your education according to KU Leuven's vision of activation and research-based education and you use the opportunities for educational professionalization offered by the faculty and the university.

Your education assignment will be determined on the basis of your specific profile. It was limited in size during the first years of your appointment. In your further career, the faculty devotes a lot of attention to the balance between research and education time.

Services

You are willing to provide scientific, social and internal services. You are particularly willing to provide services to the government and industry in the context of applied research. Therefore, you will keep up to date with the scientific state of the art as well as industrial practice and maintain close contact with the (local) field of work.

You play an active role in profiling the Faculty of Industrial Engineering to future students and the broad field of work, for example, by participating in information days and events.

Requirements

You have a diploma of doctor in Industrial Sciences, Doctor of Engineering or a related diploma. You have experience in machine building and automation.

You have a strong research file in the field. This must be evident from your publications in leading international magazines and / or relevant industrial experience in a managerial R & D function. You have the ambition to contribute to the valorisation of research in industry and society. International and industrial experience are important advantages. You also have proven qualities for academic education in your field of study. Educational experience is a plus.

You have a strong vision of research into machine construction, automation and process control in the food industry and possible synergy and compatibility with ongoing research on the technology campus and the Department of Mechanics. You possess leadership skills. You have organizational skills and you have been set up collectively.
