Applications are invited for a fully funded 2 year postdoctoral research associate (PDRA) to be conducted in the James Chadwick Pilot Hall of the School of Chemical Engineering & Analytical Science at the University of Manchester. This post is part of a large collaborative project involving the University of Manchester and Unilever and aims to develop an understanding of non-Newtonian fluids used in formulated home and personal care products. By combining theoretical and experimental methods, the project will obtain an understanding of the relationship between the process engineering and modelling of the materials.

 

The PDRA position will be to develop in situ optical measurement techniques on the existing flow rigs and batch reactors. Part of this will involve the development of laser flow measurement techniques such as PIV and PLIF as well as research into novel fibre optic sensors for in situ probing such as with polymer optical fibres. In addition, you will work closely with other researchers in the process analytics group to achieve the overall project objectives.

 

  • You should have experience of process engineering and experimental measurements in complex fluids with in situ optical measurements in industrial environments. It is also desirable that you have expertise in one or more of the following: (i) optical measurement in complex /non-Newtonian liquids; (ii) fibre optic sensing, (iii) optical flow measurement, iv) in situ spectroscopy techniques such as Raman and near –infrared.
  • Candidates who have experience of working in a multidisciplinary project and working with industry will be particularly welcome


You should already hold or be nearing completion of a Ph.D./D.Phil. in an area relevant to the position requirements.
