Job summary

The Mechanics of Materials (MoM) Division wishes to appoint a Research Associate to conduct research into soft and hard impact of advanced transparent glass/polymer laminates and composite materials for aircraft structures at Imperial College London. The project is funded by the Chinese Commercial Aircraft Industry and the project provides an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to work closely with a leading university / industrial collaboration.

 

Duties and responsibilities

 

You would be expected to undertake project management as well as supervise industrial visitors and multi-disciplinary teams of researchers. In addition, you will be expected to submit publications to refereed journals and to attract external research funding. 


You will join researchers engaged in the development of advanced transparent laminates and composite materials, to withstand harsh environments and demanding functions, including their manufacture and structural integrity assessment. You would be expected to fabricate material test coupons and perform structural integrity and other experimental assessments included detailed micro-structural analysis. The modelling would involve multi-scale techniques for impact performance of these structures. You will be required to liaise with industrial clients and other research organisations. 



This project is key in the development of advanced transparent glass/polymer laminates and composite materials for aircraft structures. We are exploring the response of various aircraft structural materials against low and high velocity impact using experimental and numerical techniques developed within our research group. High velocity 3D digital image correlation and numerical approaches such as Eulerian and Smooth Particle Hydrodynamic (SPH) will be employed to investigate the performance of advanced material systems e.g. laminated glass structures and composites, when subject to gas gun and drop-weight impact for soft and hard impactors to simulate bird-strike and runway debris impact.

 

Essential requirements

 

You should have experience in experimental techniques for structural integrity assessment and manufacture of advanced transparent laminates and composite materials. You would also be expected to perform structural integrity assessments of these material systems with gas gun, drop-weight and servo-hydraulic impacts using soft and hard projectiles. In addition, you would be expected to model failure processes at multiple scales and to perform micro-structural analysis and associated structural integrity assessments of the components used for fabrication.
