Tenure track positions (3 positions), Energy Technology, School of Technology and Innovations

·         Energy Systems Modelling

School of Technology and Innovations, subject of Energy Technology.

This position is intended to strengthen the methodological, analytical and computational research knowhow in modeling energy systems, aiming at facilitating smart sustainable energy production and consumption using appropriate mathematical, statistical, and advanced computational methods with the help of high performance computing. The position will help to strengthen the present research and teaching areas, and calls for new visions and solutions to important and challenging energy engineering modelling, simulation, and optimisation problems, both in theory and practice. The aim is to support renewable technologies in becoming more cost efficient, more predictable and more easily integrated into the energy system. The modelling seeks to improve renewable energy technologies for deployment in all the main sectors that consume energy: electricity generation, heating and cooling of buildings, and transport.

Expected areas of expertise and interest can include but are not limited to:

·         Numerical methods, simulation, simulation models, optimisation methods

·         Time series methods and models, signal processing, skills in analysis and modeling big data

·         Computational algebra and topology, finite element methods, FEM-based modeling and related analysis

·         Power grid modeling, sensoring, control of wireless sensor networks, IoT

·         Risk management and energy network resilience modeling, cyber security

·         Energy options and analysis in sustainable energy markets

·         Energy Technology: Sustainable and Flexible Energy Systems

School of Technology and Innovations, subject of Energy Technology.

The mission of this tenure track position is to add knowledge on future flexible energy systems requiring totally new planning principles based on optimal utilisation of sustainable, distributed energy resources, energy storages, and different energy vectors both in subsystems and larger systems. Subsystems can be, for example, households, blocks of flats, shopping centres, industrial facilities, hybrid power plants, different types of microgrids, energy villages, or virtual power plants. Energy storages will play a major role as flexible resources in these subsystems.

Intelligent and optimised operation and planning of future sustainable energy systems are also strongly dependent on their business models and market structures. Future operation and planning principles, based on active utilisation of renewables and flexible energy resources, need also development and understanding of compatible business models, regulation, market, tariff, and tax structures, which are based on utilisation of renewables and flexible energy resources taking strongly into account the role of customers.

Expected areas of expertise and interest can include but are not limited to:

·         Distributed energy resources’ (DER) (e.g. generation, energy storages, demand response, electric vehicles, interconnections) potential in network operation and management

·         Cost efficiency and reliability and maximum integration of renewable energy resources (RES)

·         Integration of electricity networks’ flexible energy resources with other energy networks/vectors (heat, biogas, transport, natural gas network, hydrogen) and their simultaneous consideration in the operation of energy systems

·         New planning principles based on optimal utilisation of sustainable, distributed energy resources

·         Future energy market related business models, focusing especially on the role of customers

·         Energy Technology: Internal Combustion Engines

School of Technology and Innovations, subject of Energy Technology.

The position is intended to expand and strengthen the education and research in internal combustion engine (ICE) technology and engine fuels. A world-leading energy company develops energy solutions and manufactures medium-speed gas and diesel engines in Vaasa. The company concentrates its R&D activities to the Vaasa region, and the University of Vaasa is one of the main research partners of the company. The new research platform of the university, VEBIC, will serve as an essential R&D platform for the company, its partners, and subcontractors. Expected areas of expertise and interest can include but are not limited to:

o    Modelling and simulation of the engine and power plant processes, also covering transient loading situations

o    Smart engine control and digital solutions

o   Hybrid applications

All applicants should have excellent academic credentials and demonstrated potential for conducting outstanding research. We are particularly interested in applicants with interdisciplinary interests and strong records of, or potential for, excellence in teaching.

Although the positions are envisioned as appropriate for advanced Assistant or Associate Professor candidates, applications for full Professor will be considered.
