Our profile

The Chair of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage System Technology is part of the Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives (ISEA) at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at RWTH Aachen University. With about 70 scientists and engineers and more than 80 students, we are the largest university working group in Germany, which deals with the basics of battery technology and their system integration in applications.

Our goal is to understand, in particular, batteries of all relevant technologies so that we can then develop models for electrical simulations, thermal models, lifetime predictions or diagnostic algorithms for determining state of charge, performance or aging. For this, we have high-quality laboratory equipment, eg for the electrochemical analysis of aging processes, the largest test field for battery cells and battery systems at a German university and laboratories for the development of electronics and the construction of complete battery systems, including state-of-the-art prototype production. We develop battery systems for various mobile and stationary applications.

You would like to actively participate in the great technical and social challenges of a sustainable energy supply? You like to work on technical details and think in big contexts? If you enjoy working in a large team that deals with the storage of electrical energy and develops optimal energy storage solutions for a wide range of applications, then you have come to the right place.

We employ employees with a university degree (Master or equivalent) in electrical engineering and information technology, physics, chemistry, process engineering, materials science, computer science and the corresponding industrial engineering courses. You are interested in participating in exciting projects with partners from industry or academia. Ideally, they have experience in thermal and FVM modeling and master the basics of electrochemical systems.


Your tasks


They are actively involved in projects dealing with the modeling of lithium-ion batteries for mobile and stationary applications. For example, our real-time capable electro-thermal simulations are used in the field. Most projects are carried out in collaboration or on behalf of the industry. 
The focus of the work can be: 

- Further development of physico-chemical battery models 
- Further development of electrical / thermal and real-time battery 
simulations - Development of parameterization experiments, which give necessary input for the simulation 
Beside the project-related tasks the supervision of student work in the subject area is desired and the cooperation in the teaching possible.

A strong professional exchange with colleagues in the institute and in the consortia of the research projects is largely possible and desirable, since this work is closely linked to the questions at the overall system level. The institute's equipment includes state-of-the-art equipment for the electrical and physico-chemical characterization of battery systems as well as powerful computers for carrying out the simulations.

Recruitment is in the employment relationship. 
The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and limited to 2 years. An extension of at least 1 year is planned. 
This is a full time position. On request, a part-time employment can be made possible. 
A doctorate exists. 
The place is rated with EG 13 TV-L.
