Strongly correlated electron systems usually belong to the group transition metal oxides. In recent decades, however, a new playground has been opened for the chemists and physicists of the permanent state, namely the organometallic compounds. In these materials, a network of organic groups with transition metals or rare earths is combined. The form and electronic configuration of molecules play a crucial role in the crystallographic structure and affect the correlation between the magnetic metal ions and hence the physical properties of the material. Organometallic compounds thus, in principle, show endless possibilities for tailoring magnetic properties by making small changes to the crystal structure and / or metal ions. Thus, these materials are an ideal playground for researchers to discover and study quantum effects and exotic phenomena such as quantum magnetism, superconductivity and Bose-Einstein condensate. An additional advantage of organometallic compounds is that they are relatively easy to synthesize (as compared to, for example, metal oxides) and require no advanced and expensive experimental arrangements.

 

This Postdoc position in the field of theory and material informatics is part of a project "The Swedish Quest for BIFROST", funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR). The project aims to strengthen the Swedish user base in neutron scattering and especially in the field of magnetic quantum neutron spectroscopy. The aim is for Swedish researchers to be early expert users of the BIFROST instrument and other neutron spectrometers at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund. In order to fully benefit from this world-leading facility, adequate tools for data analysis, modeling and visualization are necessary. This Postdoc will conduct research on the subject data mining of magnetic properties of organometallic materials, emphasizing the features that are most important for comparison with neutron spectroscopy,S (Q, E) containing information about the system's magnetic excitations.

 

The discovery of new physical phenomena is based on the ability to simulate and synthesize new materials. In order to model new materials and to perform so-called "virtual material synthesis" of primarily magnetic organometallic materials, we have developed a dedicated database: "Organic Materials Data-Base" (OMDB) at KTH and NORDITA . The development and use of this database is a vital part of this postdoc project. This database will allow to search for promising candidates of magnetic organometallic materials that can then be synthesized by our experimental partners in the project and then studied through neutron spectroscopy. OMDB http://www.omdb.diracmaterials.orgcontains several thousand electronic structural calculations for organic crystals. The database is intended for predicting new functional materials through advanced database / data mining tools. This postdoc will expand the database with the main focus on virtual material synthesis and investigation of magnetic organometals as well as developing and using advanced search tools in the field of data mining and machine learning.

 

The appointment includes implementing a broad research program with strong links to ongoing development work and the use of the database at Nordita. This also includes strong collaboration with colleagues and visitors at KTH, Nordita and other places in the Nordic region.

 

qualifications

 

We are looking for a candidate who has completed his PhD student in the state of physics or computational physics in the last three years. An elderly degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave etc. In the recruitment process, particular attention will be given to strong candidates in the fields of computational physics or theoretical condensed material physics, as well as those who have special interest and experience in computer science and machine learning. An earlier experience of neutron spread is seen as extra merit but is not a requirement.
