Research group


EMBLA is a research group focusing on developing new methods in microfabrication and integrating systems with microfluidics to develop new experimental platforms for visualization and characterization of cells, thereby better understanding human biology. EMBLA is part of the Department of Microsystem Systems Technology (MST) at the Department of Engineering Sciences and we have our lab at Ångström Laboratory. We are currently 15 people in the research group and are now recruiting a PhD student to join one of our research projects.

Research


project Biomaterials are a promising alternative for replacing or regenerating damaged bone tissue. They can increase the quality of life for some patients but before they reach the market, they must be tested in preclinical and clinical analyzes to ensure their safety and benefits. It is common to initially test the biological properties of biomaterials with cell culture techniques. However, the results obtained from studies with cells have shown that they often do not correlate well when biomaterials are implanted in the body. The research project aims at developing a new method for integrating and testing the biological properties of different biomaterials in a chip, which is expected to mimic physiological conditions better.

 

The employment is four years. If institutional employment of up to 20 percent is included in the employment, an extension may be granted up to a maximum of five years. Further information is available at http://www.teknat.uu.se and http://teknik.uu.se

 

Qualifications


We are looking for a creative person with strong motivation who, at the agreed start date, has a master's degree in master's degree or equivalent (eg Master of Science in Engineering) with specialization in Materials Engineering, Biotechnology or other appropriate focus. Experience in the manufacture of microfabrication, biomaterials and cell cultivation is meritorious.

 

We attach great importance to personal qualifications. We are looking for a proactive person with a good ability to work independently and in groups. It is important that you are enthusiastic about the doctoral program and are motivated to learn new methods and technologies. In addition, you must have easy to communicate research results and have good analytical ability. You need good knowledge of English, both verbally and in writing.
