Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Optical Wireless Communications

We are seeking a full-time postdoctoral researcher to join the optical wireless communications research group at the Department of Engineering Science in central Oxford. The post is funded by the EPSRC as part of the project QDOS LITE. The post is available immediately and is fixed-term until 31 March 2019.

 

Quantum Key Distribution using free-space optical links can provide secure information transmission between Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and ground based terminals. In project demonstration QKD links will be developed and implemented. The work is led by Airbus and includes KETS, ID Quantique, the University of Bristol as well as Oxford.

 

You will play a key role in this cutting-edge work, and will lead the modification of an existing ground based terminal to support QKD transmission, and work with other partners to build and test an operating link, as well as investigate new architectures. The project will be highly collaborative and involve some work at other partners’ institutions as well as field tests.

 

The successful applicant will have skills in photonic systems research and experimentation, preferably in an area relevant to free-space optical communications, as well as the drive and enthusiasm to create working communications demonstrators. You should hold a PhD (or be near completion) or hold equivalent experience in a suitable subject (a relevant branch of Engineering or Physics). This is an excellent opportunity to work in the rapidly growing and now commercially relevant area of Quantum Key Distribution, and to gain skills in this exciting new area.
