PHD POSITION ON LASER TEXTURING FOR SMART SURFACES

(Ref.BAP-2017-620)

Last modified: 30/11/2017

The Production Engineering Group of PMA has a long history of innovative developments in the areas of hybrid processes (https://www.mech.kuleuven.be/en/research/subtractive-manufacturing), additive manufacturing (https://set.kuleuven.be/am) and micromanufacturing (https://www.mech.kuleuven.be/en/research/mpe). You will join our team of researchers to work on a research project focusing on establishing novel material processing techniques using advanced mechanical machining and laser‐based technologies. In this context, the project will focus on the generation of smart surfaces in close collaboration with the department of materials engineering.

Project

Laser surface texturing is of increasing interest in many technical and medical applications. With the incorporation of microtextures on parts surfaces, added functionalities can be obtained by changing properties related for example to wettability, corrosion susceptibility, frictional behaviour, optical response, aerodynamics or biocompatibility of the components. In order to achieve this goal, the project will focus on the design, integration and testing of a laser set-up for the fabrication of microtextures on metallic components.

Profile

We are looking for a PhD student researcher (4-year position) with:

  • a master's degree in mechanical engineering, applied physics, materials engineering, or in a related domain
  • experience in laser systems integration, laser material processing or multiphysics modelling
  • good communication skills (oral and written) in English, knowledge of Dutch is a plus
  • interest for research and ability to pay close attention to details
  • enthusiasm for learning and willingness to take initiatives to acquire new skills and explore innovative ideas

offer

You will get:

  • the opportunity to be part of a dynamic research group and to conduct research towards a PhD at an internationally renowned research university
  • an attractive salary according to your experience and the relevant university salary scales
  • networking opportunities through participation in conferences, workshops and collaborations with local and international research groups and companies
  • the opportunity to develop teaching and management skills
  • a work location in the nice environment of Campus Arenberg in Heverlee, Belgium
