Post-doctoral Position in Gas Turbine Combustion Instabilities (IV-10/18)

 

Description

 

A post-doctoral position in gas turbine combustion instabilities is available at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT) within the Fluid Mechanics research group. The position is funded by the Norwegian CCS Research Centre (NCCS) where one of the research tasks is dedicated to the effect of fuel flexibility on the stability and operational range of low-emission gas turbines in collaboration with Ansaldo Energia and Sintef Energy.

 

State-of-the-art gas turbine power plants are efficient, complex machines optimised to burn natural gas usually at constant load. However, they have the potential to be both fuel flexible and operationally flexible. It is well known that one of the most serious challenges facing the gas turbine industry is that low-NOx combustion technologies are prone to thermoacoustic instabilities which limit the operating range and cause mechanical failure. The effect of fuels relevant to CCS applications, such as methane-hydrogen mixtures, pure and diluted hydrogen on thermoacoustic instabilities is currently unknown.

 

As an experienced researcher, you will take a leading role in a research project that will include two PhD students with a focus on the effect of fuel flexibility on combustion instabilities in annular combustors. You will join an active group in gas turbine combustion with Professors Nicholas Worth, Jonas Moeck and James Dawson and will be expected to have regular interactions with Ansaldo Energia. The research will be undertaken in a new combustion laboratory for fundamental and applied research in gas turbine combustion. A variety of cold flow and optical experimental combustion facilities including a forced atmospheric annular combustor, transverse forced rig and multiple flame rigs will be used to investigate the effect of flame-flame interactions on flame describing functions (FDF) different fuel compositions such as methane/hydrogen blends. The lab is also well equipped with data acquisition systems, instrumentation, and state-of-the-art, high-speed PIV and laser induced fluorescence systems.

 

 

Qualifications

The successful candidate;

  • Completed or be very near completion of a PhD in a subject in combustion or fluid mechanics
  • Should ideally have experience in advanced measurement methods and laser diagnostics.
  • Expected to have a good publication record based on their career to date.
  • A strong proficiency in one or more computing languages such as Matlab, Maple, Fortran, or C etc. is essential.
  • Excellent English skills, spoken and written, are required.

Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

 

 

Conditions

Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 485,700 per annum before tax. There will be a 2% deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage. The appointment of the Postdoctoral fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees.

 

The Postdoctoral fellowship is awarded for 2 years.
