Research Assistant/Associate (Fixed Term) - Terahertz Applications Group

A Research Assistant/Associate position is available in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology working with Professor Axel Zeitler. This post is part of a project funded by Innovate UK and carried out in collaboration with our industrial partners TeraView, Huxley Bertram and GSK.


This project will develop a new, rapid and non-destructive test instrument for predicting tablet efficacy and performance, based on direct measurements of tablet porosity using terahertz radiation. In so doing, we expect to contribute to manufacturing efficiency improvements in production of advanced solid dose medicines. The measurement system is intended to complement existing methods (dissolution/disintegration and hardness testing) to improve tablet quality during the formulation and process development. The ultimate goal of this technology platform will be is to serve as a real-time, in-line test and feedback mechanism as the industry moves towards continuous manufacturing.


The successful candidate will have a PhD (or be close to being awarded their PhD) in Chemical Engineering, Physics, Pharmaceutical technology, chemistry of a related discipline. They should also have experience with terahertz spectroscopy and/or pharmaceutical powder compaction and a proven track record in effective collaboration as part of a team. They should also have experience of presenting research results through conference papers and an excellent record of publishing high quality scientific papers.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 22 months in the first instance.
