JOB DESCRIPTION

Aalborg University is currently seeking to expand its research team with a Professor in the field of urban planning, with a special focus on urbanisation processes and the development of smart, sustainable, and liveable cities.

A successful applicant should have strong research experience aligned to at least two of the following fields:

  • Urbanisation within a global sustainable development perspective

  • Intersections between land-use, housing, and transport planning

  • Urban agendas and urban policies, e.g. densification and green infrastructure

  • Urban infrastructure and mobility focused on public transportation, walking, and cycling

The department has traditionally played an important role in urban planning research nationally and internationally. With the described profile, the department wishes to strengthen and consolidate its position within the research field of urban planning.

As Professor, you will be expected to develop a strong research profile within the field of urban planning, including supporting young academics in their career development. Experience with supervision of PhD students is advantageous. With the responsibility to initiate, attract and lead externally funded research and innovation projects, you are required to be experienced in project development and project management. The geographic scope of your field of interest should include a European and global perspective, with knowledge of planning in at least one of the Nordic countries desirable.

As Professor, you will be expected to play a leading role in teaching and the development of curriculums for the M.Sc. programme in Urban Planning and Management. However, you may also be involved in teaching at other study programmes at Aalborg University.

Your main efforts will be to:

  • Strengthen the existing research environment in urban planning at the Department of Planning

  • Attract external funding to establish a research agenda with international impact and visibility

  • Supervise PhD students

  • Provide leadership for the master’s programme in Urban Planning and Management at the Department of Planning

  • Actively engage with internal and external research environments and beyond in order to strengthen Aalborg University’s position within the field of urban planning

We offer an innovative research environment within the field of urban planning with a strong Scandinavian and European outlook. The Department of Planning at Aalborg University has a strong tradition for critical urban research within the research areas of ‘sustainable urban planning’ and ‘power in planning’.

In addition, the department has two well-established international master’s programmes in Urban Planning and Management, and Land Management. All programmes at Aalborg University utilise a problem-based learning teaching philosophy, which, among other things, requires that at least half of the ECTS per semester are derived from group-based student projects. This model offers ample opportunities for developing strong ties between teaching, research, and planning practice.
