Applications are invited for Tier 1 and Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) faculty positions in Advanced Materials. The successful candidate Tier 1 CRC candidate is expected to be a world renowned expert in their field with a demonstrated track record of productive research and teaching. The successful Tier 2 CRC candidate is expected to be an exceptional early stage researcher with demonstrated excellence in teaching. Tier 2 CRC applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. Both chairs are expected to establish productive research programs in Advanced Materials. We are particularly interested in researchers with demonstrated interest in developing research programs in support of our efforts in soft materials, nano-bubble engineering, and renewable energy. Candidates must hold a PhD in materials science and engineering or a closely related field, and demonstrated expertise in advanced materials. Applications will be considered that complement existing departmental strengths including physical metallurgy, materials characterization, electronic materials, energy-related materials, and soft and bio materials. Candidates must have the ability to conduct both independent and cooperative research, develop viable and productive research programs, and to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in materials engineering.


The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta is a global leader in research and education. With a faculty complement of 54 and plans for continued expansion, we have created a dynamic and supportive research environment. Among your peers in the department, you will find a Canada Excellence Research Chair, 7 Canada Research Chairs, 6 NSERC Industrial Research Chairs (the largest concentration of such chairs in any department at Canadian universities), a Campus Alberta Innovates Program Chair, and 6 endowed chairs. Our rapidly expanding research programs involve approximately 350 graduate students and 70 other researchers. The exceptional experimental and computational facilities available to our faculty members include comprehensive set of analytical and characterization facilities such as the Alberta Centre for Surface Engineering and Science (ACSES) and the nanoFAB (Fabrication & Characterization Facility) and an extensive set of departmental characterization equipment. In addition, our researchers have access to on-site machine and instrumentation shops, as well as one of the most technologically advanced nanotechnology facilities in the world – the National Institute for Nanotechnology (NINT).
