Postdoc in Ship Performance Simulation DTU Mechanical Engineering Denmark

Postdoc in Ship Performance Simulation

DTU Mekanik

Deadline 31 August 2017

You can apply for the job at DTU Mechanics by completing the following application form.

Apply online

The Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Department of Mechanical Engineering has an open postdoc position in the field of ship hydrodynamics. The position will address mainly, but not only, the hydrodynamics in simulation of ship performance, i.e. simulation of the performance of a ship in daily operation.

The maritime group within DTU Mechanical Engineering, Section of Fluid Mechanics, Coastal and Maritime Engineering conducts teaching and research in maritime technology, from classical naval architecture to advanced ship propulsion and wave loads and motions. The group of teachers and researchers specializing in maritime technology consists of four professors, assistant and associate professors and a number of postdocs, PhD students and research assistants. Research topics are wave loads on ships and other floating structures and propulsion of ships including resistance, propellers, and interaction between hull and propeller

Responsibilities and tasks

The postdoc candidate will work with the Ship Simulation Workbench project. The core of this project is the simulation of the performance of a ship in daily operation. It is based on elements of classical naval architecture and ship hydrodynamics, such as stability, cargo capacity, propulsive power and wave motions and loads. Moreover, it also includes implementation of results of the research of the maritime group at DTU in the form of newly developed methods and obtained research results.

Results of the ship simulation system will be used to compare the technical operational performance of various ship designs, and to assess the importance and quality of different methods for prediction of propulsion, wave loads etc. Hence, the system must be able produce results with respect to safety and environmental performance of a ship, including motions in waves, structural loads, fuel consumption, emissions, transport work etc.

The postdoc candidate will play a key role in the development of this system from its start. The candidate’s tasks will comprise a systematic general description of the system, including requirements to the programming language and a detailed description of the data structure. The candidate must do the implementation of the core modules as well as addition of wave, economy and environment modules.

Besides a good background within ship hydrodynamics and ship performance the position requires good cooperation capabilities, since the development of the Ship Simulation Workbench must be done in close cooperation not only within the maritime group at DTU but also with the maritime industry in Denmark.

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent.

The candidate must have a PhD degree in ship hydrodynamics. The topic of the degree must be within ship propulsion, propellers or seakeeping. Moreover, the candidate must be a naval architect (BSc or MSc).
