Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg (HSU/UniBw H) intends to strategically promote excellent research in specific focus areas that address critical societal challenges and ensure future growth. The Faculties of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering also aim to strengthen further their joint research activities on logistics and defence, energy, and materials. To fulfil this ambition, the faculties invite outstanding applications for three new full professorship positions, in the fields of high-performance computing for advanced multiscale simulations, computational material design, and laser technology. The positions will be filled as soon as possible.

Prerequisites for the employment are a university degree, an outstanding doctoral thesis and an excellent publication record in peer-reviewed, renowned international journals. Strong academic research record of international level, a clear commitment to teaching and the demonstrated ability to lead a research group are expected. In evaluating the candidates’ performance, the selection committee will give adequate consideration to the career stage and the personal circumstances of the candidates. The applicants should document their success in winning competitive research grants from national and international funding organizations, and the evidence of their recognition in their respective, national and international research communities. Professorship W3 in Laser Technology

(reference number: ET-89)

The applicant should have internationally recognized expertise and a strong fundamental research background in the field of experimental laser technology in science and engineering (PhD in Physics or Eng. Science). Ideally, a strong experience in, at least, one of the following areas is desired:

  • Development of new laser concepts and coherent sources for future photonic technologies, preferably for solid state laser sources in the near and mid infrared spectral regions
  • Application of new laser sources for spectroscopy and sensing, for example for environmental science, medicine, or defence& security
    • Development of new materials for photonics and laser applications, including crystal growth of important materials for lasers, nonlinear frequency conversion as well as micro-structured materials, and additive manufacturing

The successful candidate is expected to build up a new group in laser science that makes full use of synergies between the areas of advanced materials development, laser technologies, and laser applications. Strong collaborations with the existing research groups of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and the other new professorships are strongly encouraged. The new group is expected to carry out a top-class research, closely connected to the other activities related to lasers and photonic research, in particular in the Hamburg region.

The new professorship will be fully involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities. This will include the Bachelor and Master programs of the faculties, in particular the English curricula Engineering Science: Defence Systems. Apart from the core modules, the successful applicants will be expected to run some advanced courses on the topics related to their specific fields of research.

The Faculties of Mechanical and of Electrical Engineering offer excellent equipment and infrastructure facilities, collegiate atmosphere to stimulate collaboration and opportunities to actively shape future research strategies as well as develop innovative teaching concepts. The successful candidates will have full access to this excellent infrastructure and inspiring research and learning environment. The positions are supported by a generous budget for personnel and equipment costs.

The Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg offers bachelor and master degree courses for officer candidates and officers based on a trimester system with a shortened standard period of study and complemented by interdisciplinary course elements (ISA). In individual cases, scholarship holders from industry are accepted.

The holder of the position is expected to prepare students for occupations in and outside the Federal Armed Forces that require the application of academic knowledge and methods and to additionally assume functions in the field of further education and ISA teaching.
