INL is seeking a high level qualified, motivated and experienced researcher to reinforce ongoing efforts to develop systems targeting specific applications that integrate MTJ devices near their operational limits.  Such applications usually rely on the room temperature detection of magnetic fields bellow 100 pT/Hz0.5 and include, but are not limited to, magnetocardiography, NMR, indoor navigation and magnetic imaging.

The candidate will integrate a research team and is expected to strongly interact with people of different backgrounds, including those responsible for the micro and nanofabrication of standalone MTJ devices as well as those participating in the integration of such devices at a system level (with microfluidic systems and CMOS data acquisition circuits).

The activities of this position will be framed within running research projects (P2020-PRODUTECH, P2020-INFANTE, P2020-Magline, P2020-Nano4Sense) as well as future research projects and industrial contracts with the participation of INL.

Job Role & Key Responsibilities

As TMR devices operational limits Staff Researcher you will take on a key role within the following responsibilities:

  • Develop a setup for the characterization of the MTJ devices noise spectral distribution in the frequency domain;
  • Relate the noise properties with key design parameters (MTJ stack, device geometry, interconnection scheme);
  • Establish a strategy for the reduction of noise detection limits down to the requirements of each particular application, having in mind the specific constrains of each one;
  • Use benchtop electronic instruments to establish and demonstrate at a device level a measurement protocol which is suitable for each intended application;
  • Optimize parameters of the data acquisition system (time domain vs frequency domain acquisition, hardware filters, software filters, averaging, post-acquisition data processing, excitation conditions) and identify an adequate set of parameters for each intended application;
  • Interact with electrical engineers in order to implement these measurement protocols in autonomous demonstration systems at PCB level bringing together MTJ devices with conventional CMOS, microfluidic components (when necessary) and permanent magnets (when necessary);
  • Benchmark the final solutions employing MTJ devices against competitive solutions using other types of technologies. 

Job Requirements

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • A PHD degree in Physics, Physical Engineering, Materials Science or Electrical Engineering or other relevant subject;
  • At least 3+ experience years after obtaining the PhD degree;
  • Programming skills needed to automate data acquisition experiments (Labview, Matlab, Visual Studio, others…);
  • Previous hand-on experience in the electrical characterization of MTJ devices in the RF region;
  • Previous hand-on experience in the acquisition of 1/f noise spectrum in MTJ devices;
  • Previous hands-on experience in the design of other types of experiments targeting the electrical acquisition of weak signals from MTJ devices (requiring amplification, filtering, data processing) is valued;
  • Track record of high quality publications demonstrating the ability to independently conduct cutting-edge collaborative research;
  • Experience in simulation tools (COMSOL, micromagnetism simulators);
  • Experience with electronic circuits analysis and design is valued;
  • Previous participation in collaborative international research projects is valued;
  • Previous experience in the submission of competitive research proposals is valued.
