Position Description


The Centre for Environmental Engineering Research and Education (CEERE) in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary invites national and international applications for a Tier II Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Integrating Indigenous Knowledge and Sustainable Engineering. CEERE is focused on the development and growth of multidisciplinary research and education programs in Environmental Engineering and Energy and Environment with a mandate to bring together learners, educators, researchers and industry participants to benefit from a team-based approach for tackling current and future environmental challenges in Alberta, Canada and worldwide.


Depending on qualifications and experience, the Chair will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (with tenure). An appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor requires the completion of a PhD, evidence of successful teaching ability or professional experience, with evidence of appropriate research or professional activity beyond that involved in the completion of academic or professional training.


Appointment to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure, in addition to the completion of a PhD, requires evidence of teaching effectiveness, recognized research attainment or equivalent professional attainment, and a satisfactory record of service. In alignment with the University of Calgary's Eyes High strategic vision and in support of its strategic academic and research priorities of leadership, teaching and research integration, and creating a dynamic environment to promote research excellence, the Chair will actively contribute to research, teaching and curriculum development, and student/postdoc supervision, and is in time expected to grow into a leadership role within the Centre and the institution.


Tier II Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years from the time of their PhD at the time of nomination). Candidates who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree and who have had career breaks, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc., may have their eligibility for a Tier II Chair assessed through the program’s Tier II justification process. It is expected that the successful candidate will establish a strong research program in the area of Integrating Indigenous Knowledge and Sustainable Engineering with the potential to achieve international recognition in the next five to ten years, have the ability to attract external funding to support research activities, and be able to attract excellent trainees, students, and future researchers. A demonstrated ability to develop and teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses on topics related to the Chair position is required, and candidates must be eligible for registration as a professional engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).


The successful candidate will be an emerging scholar with an original, creative, innovative and culturally-grounded research program, with demonstrated excellence in novel design, techniques, systems and management of engineering that integrate traditional Indigenous knowledge. It is anticipated the successful candidate will have expertise in applying Indigenous knowledge and methodologies in the design and application of sustainable engineering systems, such as new techniques for environmental monitoring, low carbon and renewable energy systems, water and wastewater management processes and/or sustainable buildings. The research in integrating indigenous knowledge into sustainable engineering will align with the goals of CEERE and from a disciplinary perspective, align with one of the five Departments within the Schulich School of Engineering. Applicants should have a record of successful partnerships and/or collaborations with Indigenous communities.
