Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Visible Light Communications and LiFi

Department of Engineering Science, Parks Road, Oxford

Grade 7: £31,604 - £38,833 p.a.

We are seeking a full-time postdoctoral researcher to join the optical wireless communications research group at the Department of Engineering Science in central Oxford. The post is funded by the EPSRC and is fixed-term to 31 July 2020 with the possibility of an extension.

The project aims to create receivers for VLC and Light-Fidelity (LiFi) that are at least two orders of magnitude more sensitive than any previous receiver with a comparable bandwidth (>100MHz) and field of view (>45o). This dramatic step change in the performance of receivers will have a significant impact on VLC, LiFi, in-door location-based services, and the internet of things.

You will play a key role in this ground breaking work, and be responsible for research into our new high-gain, wide field optical antennas and the design and implementation of VLC links. You should possess a doctorate in a relevant field or be near completion and have skills in optoelectronic systems research, preferably in an area relevant to optical wireless communications, as well as the drive and enthusiasm to create VLC receivers with world-record performance.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Steve Collins (
