Research Assistant/Associate in Speech Processing (Fixed Term)

A position exists for a Research Assistant/Research Associate in the Department of Engineering to work on a project associated with the ALTA Institute at Cambridge University ( The aim of the Institute is to conduct research in computer systems and platforms, corpus linguistics, computational linguistics, speech processing and machine learning relevant to the activities of Cambridge Assessment English (


The project will continue an on-going project with Cambridge English on assessing and giving feedback for learning spoken English as a second language. The project will develop systems to extract rich features from spoken audio and speech recognition output of non-native speakers for language assessment and error detection and correction. This research will build on the current CUED speech recognition and automated grading systems.


The key responsibilities and duties are to design and develop appropriate methodologies to address the above research objective with a focus on non-native speech recognition and feature extraction and classification. Please refer to the HR7 for further details.


Successful applicants will have a very good first degree in engineering, computer science or a closely related field and have obtained or be close to obtaining a PhD degree in an area related to speech technology. It is expected that candidates will have a good knowledge of speech software tools such as HTK or Kaldi and/or general deep-learning tools such as TensorFlow and pyTorch, and/or tools for spoken language assessment. Good knowledge of C/C+ is desirable. Furthermore, experience in one or more of the following technical areas is necessary: machine learning; acoustic or language modelling for speech recognition; spoken language assessment or assessment technology; non-native speech or language modelling.


Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £25,728 - £30,688 Research Associate: £31,604 - £38,833


Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 September 2019 in the first instance.
