Postdoc in Optimization and Industrial Engineering

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Materials and Production a position as postdoc in Optimization and Industrial Engineering is open for appointment from 1 June, 2018 or soon thereafter, and for two years. Department of Materials and Production (MP) is a wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department's mission is to meet future demands for production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding, mechanical constructions, industrial production and management. The department has several strong, international and innovative research groups, which cover everything from basic science to strategic and applied research. Thereby, as an employee at the Department you will become a part of an international research environment, where focus is on innovation, knowledge sharing/building and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Job description

The position is within the Operations Research (OR) group at Aalborg University and the research is in a highly synergic cooperation with leading Danish and European companies and academic partners. The group focuses on the practical applications of operations research as well as on strengthening the field’s theoretical basis through method development and testing. The OR group focuses on analyzing, modeling and solving large-scale decision problems primarily in the domains of manufacturing, transportation and defense.

The successful applicant will participate in education, academic and collaborative research activities in the group and with external partners. The aim is to develop optimization and decision-aiding algorithms and tools in the framework of projects related to autonomous physical systems using e.g. automated guided vehicles (AGVs), mobile robots and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The work within autonomous systems is linked to innovative use of communication technology such as IoT and has a focus on real-time decision-making. The successful applicant will have a demonstrated research experience in production scheduling and/or routing, in particular in a stochastic, robust or dynamic context. The candidate will be expected to contribute to ongoing research projects as well as participate in activities supporting future research project (extensions of current and new projects) and initiatives.

The candidate should be able to demonstrate research height in form of Web of Science publications and the preferred candidate will also be able to demonstrate application of research in practice. Appropriate candidates should have a master‘s and PhD degree in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science or related fields and have strong mathematical and programming skills.

Teaching activities primarily within the Global Business Engineering and Operations and Supply Chain Management engineering programs can be expected.

Qualification requirements: 
Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
