The MeBioS department within the Biosystems department conducts research into the interaction between biosystems and technology with a view to designing and managing innovative systems for application in the agrifood sector.

For a new research project on self-propelled forage harvesters in collaboration with Case New Holland Industrial Belgium (CNHi), the MeBioS department at KU Leuven is looking for a motivated PhD student.

This function includes the following tasks:


  • Mechanical characterization of bio-materials for particle simulations
  • Design of test installations and processing of measurement data
  • Field tests
  • DEM computer simulations


MeBioS is looking for candidates with


  • A Master's degree in an engineering (Bio-ir, ir, ing) or scientific direction
  • Interest in agricultural machinery
  • Good knowledge of mathematics, statistics and mechanics
  • Strong experimental skills
  • Affinity with computer models / simulation models


To be a strong added value


  • Experience with the measurement of mechanical properties of bio- or construction materials
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Matlab, Python, C ++
  • Experience with simulation software (DEM, CFD, FEM, ...)
