Faculty Civil Engineering and Geosciences

The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) provides leading international research and education, with innovation and sustainability as central themes. Research and education are closely interwoven and address societal challenges. The Faculty consists of 7 departments: Materials Mechanics Management, Engineering Structures, Geoscience and Engineering , Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Transport & Planning, Hydraulic Engineering and Watermanagement.

The Transport and Planning Department (T&P) has been awarded very high scores for all research assessments in the last 15 years. T&P (about 110 members) is the biggest Department of Transportation Studies in TU Delft and has a strong track record in traffic flow theory, traffic simulation, dynamic traffic management, and intelligent transport systems of all transport modes, including cars, railway, pedestrians, and public transport. A trademark of the department is the use of empirical data, incorporation of human factors, and advanced mathematical modeling tools to solve transportation problems. The Department has greatly contributed for making TU Delft the top university in the subject of “transportation science and technology” of the Shanghai Ranking in 2017.

Job description

ELECTRIC TRAVELING is a project funded by Electric Mobility Europe that belongs to ERA-NET, an instrument under Horizon 2020 to support research in the EU.

The project is intended to ease the implementation and further development of electromobility (e-mobility) in urban and suburban areas. The project results will provide adequate ICT tools to identify smart e-mobility solutions adapted to specific urban or suburban areas and will ease the introduction of electric vehicles (EVs) and the required charging stations in the existing transport infrastructure.

The tasks involved in the post-doctoral position include:

Surveying electric vehicle' users regarding their behavior. Both stated and the revealed preference data will be used to improve the current models which explain the drivers’ route choices. We are interested namely in obtaining trade-offs between the number, size and trip motive in explaining a particular path in the city.

Work on optimization models to deploy charging stations that will be able to facilitate long-distance travels and the urban demands considering drivers’ behaviour, urban characteristics and legal regulations.
