Position Description


The Department of Civil Engineering, in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary, is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Transportation Engineering. The preferred start date of the appointment is July 1, 2018 or as negotiated.


The successful applicant will be expected to teach courses in Transportation Engineering as well as fundamental courses in civil engineering. The main criteria for selection are research and teaching excellence. The successful candidate will provide evidence of high quality scholarly output that demonstrates potential for independent research leading to peer-evaluated publications and securing of external research funding, active engagement with industry, and supervision of graduate students. The candidate must also be able to demonstrate a strong academic background and research expertise in Transportation Engineering, and an ability to work as part of our highly-collaborative research teams. Specialization and expertise are required in one or more of the following areas:


  • Transportation Network Modelling
  • Multimodal Transportation Analysis
  • Emerging Technologies in Transportation
  • Environmental Impact of Transportation

Assistant Professors will dedicate their time to teaching our undergraduate and graduate programs, engage in high impact research, publish scholarly works in high quality journals, and provide service with the university and within our profession.


Candidates must hold a B.Sc. in Engineering and a Ph.D. in engineering or a closely related discipline; a strong research track record; and evidence of excellence in teaching or demonstrated ability in excellent teaching at a university level. Relevant industrial experience is an asset. Complementing the current faculty, the incumbent is expected to participate in joint projects, and develop a strong independent research program. Candidates should have strong oral and written English communication skills. All program instruction is in English.


Candidates must be a registered professional engineer or eligible for registration as a professional engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA). Information about becoming a professional engineer can be found online.

  4. Significance and potential impact of the research
