Research Assistant/Associate in Concrete Structures (Fixed Term)

A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, to undertake research on novel tailored reinforced concrete infrastructure. The project is funded by the EPSRC in collaboration with International Industrial and Academic Partners.

Cement production is responsible for 5-7% of man-made CO2 emissions. A promising strategy to mitigate this impact is to use cement more efficiently and thereby reduce the volumes required. The research will include detailed experimental and analytical investigations of the structural behaviour of reinforced concrete and the material properties of concrete, in the context of resilience and resistance to mechanical and environmental loadings. The development of strategies to address manufacturing challenges is also envisaged.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant research team dedicated to advancing sustainable concrete solutions. The key responsibilities and duties are planning, directing and undertaking world-class technical research including: leading-edge experimental and analytical research; advanced analyses and predictions of concrete properties; studies on the complex behaviour of reinforced concrete structures; compiling and analysing data; preparing high quality journal papers; working in collaboration with others; presenting scientific results to diverse audiences.

The successful applicant must have, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or Engineering Materials; experience with sufficient breadth/depth of specialist knowledge in the analysis, design and manufacture of reinforced concrete structures and concrete materials; experience with associated research methods and techniques to deliver successful research programmes; a strong publication record of outstanding research with a demonstrated ability to successfully communicate with internal and external audiences; excellent communication skills; previous experience of working in teams and with collaborators; experience of managing own workload.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 36 months in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
