Research Assistant/Associate in Nephron on a Chip (Fixed Term)

The Biointerface Group at the Department of Engineering is looking for a Research Assistant/Associate to take part in an exciting new project to develop a nephron-on-a-chip technology. We expect this project to have an impact on fundamental understanding in the roles of microenvironment on cell phenotype maintenance, extending to practical applications for drug screening.

Our group is a multi-disciplinary group which has strong interest and expertise in developing organ-on-a-chip platforms and 3D bioprinting technology (http://www.eng.cam.ac.uk/profiles/yysh2). This project is an industrial project sponsored by the pharmaceutical company Evotec, where we are also collaborating with laboratories in UK and Europe. We are looking for candidates with experience in cell biology, biotechnology/ bioengineering, or biophysics/bioelectronics background to lead the effort on the development of novel organ-on-a-chip technology for culturing glomerular cells and stem cells, and applying methods for in situ functional measurement.

The successful candidate should have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in a relevant discipline. They should have a strong background in cell culture and histology. Experience in cell biology, microscopy and in working with microfluidics and 3D cell culture platforms is a plus. Candidates are expected to be good communicators, independent thinkers, and have the ability to bring out-of-the-box solutions to problems. They should be able to collaborate effectively with people with different backgrounds (engineers, cell biologists and the industrial partner) to further the aims of this project.

The post is available immediately and will be held in the Biointerface group (Cambridge, UK). Some visits to the industrial sponsor (based in Germany) or the collaborating institutes are expected.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £26,243 - £30,395 Research Associate: £32,236 - £39,609

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 December 2019 in the first instance.
