Research Associate/Senior Research Associate (Fixed Term) - Mass Spectrometry

A postdoctoral research associate position is available in the field of mass spectrometry at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (University of Cambridge). The successful applicant will be joining the research group of Professor Sabine Bahn. The Bahn lab, in collaboration with its spin-out company Psyomics Ltd, is developing tests for the early diagnosis of psychiatric disorders, combining digital diagnostic tools with protein/peptide signature analysis. The position presents a unique opportunity to be part of a dynamic, international team focused on translating scientific advances into innovative diagnostic tests with clinical applications. The successful candidate will lead a small team with the goal of improving the existing protein analytical workflow, and will prepare and manage the migration of the workflow into a clinical laboratory environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong analytical background and hands-on experience in developing qualitative/quantitative mass spectrometry (MS) assays. The candidate will have a good understanding of the quality assurance and regulatory frameworks applicable to IVD assays, including FDA and CE-IVD requirements. Previous experience with targeted protein analyses based on label-free quantitation and multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mass spectrometry is highly desirable. The candidate should have experience in the development of analytical workflows from sample collection, to sample analysis and data interpretation, preferably in the field of protein analysis. Proven proficiency in the analytical techniques LC and Triple Quadrupole MS is mandatory. Hands-on experience in the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of Agilent LC and Triple Quadrupole (QQQ) MS instruments is considered a plus. Requirements:

PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry or Biotechnology

Extensive hands-on experience with liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), ideally using Agilent instruments, and strong troubleshooting abilities

Strong analytical background in the field of qualitative and quantitative assay development and assay evaluation (e.g. SRM/MRM, DIA/SWATH)

Knowledge of proteomic sample preparation and enrichment techniques for biological fluids (e.g. plasma, serum, CSF); experience with protein digestions and their application in quantitative applications would be highly relevant

Experience with standard database search engines and data analysis tools

A suitable candidate will be able to plan and execute research in an efficient and independent manner, will be highly motivated and enjoy working in a multidisciplinary team environment. IT, communication/interpersonal and organizational skills are required. The appointee must be capable of presenting complex scientific topics to academic and industrial partners. Responsibilities will also include supervision of Research Assistants/Associates and Graduate Students. The funds for this position are available for until 31 December 2019.
