The 3mE Faculty (Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering) trains committed engineering students, PhD candidates and post-doctoral researchers in groundbreaking scientific research in the fields of mechanical, maritime and materials engineering. 3mE is the epitome of a dynamic, innovative faculty, with a European scope that contributes demonstrable economic and social benefits.

Our mission at the department Cognitive Robotics is to bring robotic solutions to human-inhabited environments. At the Learning and Autonomous Control group we are looking for excellent candidates with a proven track record in scientific research, an innovative research vision, and a commitment to education for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (tenured) position. Our group focuses on machine learning and autonomous navigation methods for robotics.


Strong collaborations exist within cross-faculty institutes (TU Delft Robotics Institute and TU Delft Transport Institute), our national robotic ecosystem (RoboValley, Holland Robotics), international industry and academia.


Job description

The opening within the Learning and Autonomous Control group is in the area of Robot motion control and/or autonomous navigation. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to machine learning for control, dexterous (mobile) manipulation and grasping, robot perception and motion planning. Excellent applicants from other areas of robotics will also be considered.

Candidates are expected to be, or be on their way to becoming, authorities in their own field of research, and to complement and enrich the existing research programs in the department. For the overall balance in the department, we especially welcome applications from female scientists. We expect you to:

Develop, conduct and supervise high-quality academic research in your field;

Teach general and specialized courses at undergraduate and post-graduate levels, and inspire students through teaching and post-graduate supervision;

Interact and collaborate with other researchers and specialists in academia and industry within multidisciplinary research projects;

Bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and the development of new, innovative technologies;

Secure external funding for research projects;

Be an inspiring contribution to our staff.


Applicants should have the following qualifications:

PhD degree in Computer Science, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Systems and Control, Artificial Intelligence or related disciplines. Experience in robotics and/or intelligent vehicle technology is an asset;

Strong analytical skills and ability/interest to work at the intersection of several research domains;

At least one year of research experience after the PhD, and experience outside the Netherlands;

Excellent track record in scientific research, as evident from papers in international and peer-reviewed journals;

High motivation for implementing your own vision within the interdisciplinary environment that CoR offers;

Team player with the ability to clearly communicate and eager to look for and exploit synergies CoR and its network provides.


Conditions of employment
At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leaders and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made at the end of the fifth year whether to offer you a permanent faculty position.
The salary for a Tenure Track (Assistant Professor) position is min. €3.637 to max. €5.656 per month gross.
For exceptionally strong candidates, a shortened tenure track period or Associate Professor position can be considered. For an Associate Professor position different terms of employment apply. Depending on background and experience, the salary can range from min. €5.039 to max. €6.738 per month gross.
