Postdoc position in cutting edge optimization for metal machining


Applications are invited for a 2.5 year postdoctoral position with a background in computational solid mechanics. The focus of the project will be on shape optimization of cutting edge for improving milling process of metals. This research opportunity broadly involves development of physics-based computational approaches and systematic simulations for understanding micromechanics of material removal from metallic surfaces. The research will be conducted at the Surface Mechanics Group (http://eng.au.dk/surface-mechanics/) at Engineering Department of Aarhus University, Denmark.



This project is part of a big Grand Solution industrial project, which is funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark. Therefore, close and regular collaborations with industries will be seen as a natural part of the research activities. The ultimate goal of the project is to fabricate optimized milling tools for steel machining. 
The position is available from 1st , March 2019 or as soon as possible hereafter. All applications must be made online and received by 15th February.  The initial appointment will be for one year with a possible extension depending on the performance.



Main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Conduct research using advanced computational simulations

  • Work in collaboration with PhD and Master students

  • Prepare oral and written presentations for conferences and peer-reviewed journal

  • Apply for individual fellowships to secure independent funding


Your profile


An ideal candidate must have a strong background in computational mechanics, with a good knowledge of nonlinear solid mechanics and failure mechanisms, i.e. plasticity and fracture. Experience with numerical methods such as finite element and/or molecular dynamics are required. Knowledge of metal machining processes will be a plus.


Educational qualifications


The applicant must hold a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, Physics, or a related discipline and has strong written and communication skills and a demonstrated publication record. This means that after the deadline for applications and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. Formalities and salary range 


Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
