Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering
Candidates must hold earned degrees, including the doctorate, in chemical engineering or closely related fields. A demonstrated record of excellence in teaching, scholarship and professional service is required. Preference will be given to candidates with ABET accreditation experience.
The successful candidate must be a dynamic and innovative individual with demonstrated leadership and administrative experience within the context of the American education model. Strong communication skills to engage with a wide variety of constituents within and outside the university are necessary. The selected individual will have the opportunity to develop and articulate a vision and long-range plan for the department in research strategy to include areas vital to Sharjah, UAE and the region. Enhancing funding opportunities for research, outreach and graduate student support are important dimensions that the Head of Department will lead.
The bachelor of science degree offered by the department is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.abet.org). The master of science degree is offered with thesis and project options. All BS and MS degrees are accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The department currently has 13 full-time faculty, 4 lab instructors, an administrative assistant, 307 undergraduate students and 23 master students. Strengths include a dedicated, energetic and collegial faculty, an engaged student body, state-of-the-art laboratories, and a highly supportive college and university administration. Students and faculty represent very diverse backgrounds and nationalities; more than 90 nationalities are present on campus. A major facilities expansion for the College of Engineering is under way that will approximately double the lab, classroom, office and support functions of the college and department.
American University of Sharjah is increasing its research capacity and has already established four research institutes, namely, Smart Cities, Materials Science and Engineering, Biosciences and Bioengineering, and Gulf Environments. The research institutes are in the process of initiating interdisciplinary PhD programs. Further information about the research institutes and centers can be found at http://www.aus.edu/research. Preference will be given to candidates who have potential to develop a strong research program aligned with one or more of the research institutes and teach courses in the Department of Chemical Engineering.
