A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available for an outstanding and ambitious manufacturing engineer or scientist to undertake research in an EPSRC funded project on hybrid laser-ultrasonic-mechanical machining process development in collaboration with Loughborough University, Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) of University of Sheffield, BAE Systems and Sandvik Coromant. Based in the Laser Processing Research Centre, you will develop a validated mathematical model on heat flows and material softening effect during laser interactions with various metallic alloys such as Ti alloys, Ni alloy and metal matrix composite (CMM) materials, as a function of laser energy density, spot size, beam geometry, and interaction time, in a hybrid machining process and design, implement and evaluate an experimental laser heating system for improved mechanical machining efficiency and quality, including the understanding of material microstructure characteristic, material removal rate, heat distribution, and overcoming high reflectivity of the workpieces.

 

You will hold, or be about to obtain, a PhD degree in laser processing or advanced manufacturing with demonstrated relevant capabilities such as laser processing experiments or modelling to complete this project or have relevant industrial research experience. Expertise in laser processing of metallic materials and design of laser processing systems is essential, and previous experience in the mathematical modelling of heat flow in complex material geometry with dynamic material mass changes (such as material removal) and metal matrix composite materials is desirable.

 

You should have proven ability to work independently, possess strong experimental and data analysis skills, engineering design and material characterisation and be able to present results in an effective manner and has a track record of generating high quality peer reviewed publications. You should be able to interact effectively with researchers from other disciplines and academic/industrial partners. Good written and oral communication skills are also essential.

 

The post will be available from 1 April 2019 for a period of up to 30 months.
