A postdoctoral Research Associate position is available for an outstanding and ambitious materials scientist to undertake research in the field of Nano-scale Infrared Spectroscopy of Low-dimensional Materials, particularly graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, transition metal dichalcogenides and their derivatives.


You should have, or be working towards, a PhD or equivalent in materials science, physics, chemistry or nanotechnology. Expertise in infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy and atomic-force microscopy (AFM) techniques is essential. You should be capable of working under your own initiative and leading a small research team, so excellent communication and organisational skills are also required.


A Research Associate working on this project will collaborate closely with Bruker Nano Ltd., the industrial partner in the project, to employ AFM-coupled IR spectroscopy to investigate the chemical and optoelectronic properties of a range of 2-dimensional (2-D) nanomaterials. The aim of the project is to demonstrate the capabilities and versatility of the NanoIR platform in spectroscopic characterisation of 2-D materials. The Associate will work with 2-D materials such as graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, transition metal dichalcogenides and their derivatives. The Associate will also be involved in instrumentation development to further the capabilities of the NanoIR platform, such as with fluid-phase spectroscopy and inert-environment spectroscopy. The Associate will also participate in undertaking various chemical modifications of 2-D materials that will be analysed by this technique.
