The flagship University of Manchester at Harwell Research Fellowships are aimed at outstanding scientists and engineers at an early stage in their academic careers. One of these prestigious Fellowships is offered in the area of advanced structures for nuclear fusion reactors. The Fellowship is for an initial 5 year period, with potential to lead to full academic tenure on completion subject to performance, and is a joint venture between the University of Manchester and the ISIS neutron source at Harwell.

 

Applications are invited for the above position with an immediate start to:

  • Identify and secure significant external research funding and undertake and direct high quality research in areas complementary to the current research activities in the School of MACE and at the ISIS Neutron Source, Harwell;
  • Develop strong interactions with the ISIS Neutron Source in the areas of the understanding of engineering materials, jointing and structures for nuclear fusion reactors;
  • Publish high quality, peer reviewed research papers, eligible for submission to REF.
  • Develop the impact of research through suitable collaborations and partnerships, including building a network of users and facilities at Harwell.
  • Attract and supervise graduate students and postdoctoral research assistants and provide excellent teaching and learning, conveying expertise in nuclear fusion and engineering materials.

 

The Fellow will be appointed jointly by the School of Mechanical Aerospace and Civil Engineering (MACE) and the University of Manchester at Harwell (UoMaH) together with the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). They will be based, and operationally managed, at the Harwell campus by the Director UoMaH and be affiliated to the School of MACE, where they will also have an academic line-manager.

 

The Fellow’s work will be split between research and in building a network of users and facilities at the Harwell light sources in areas of research understanding new engineering materials, new component structures and new manufacturing methods for nuclear fusion reactors in collaboration with the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), with access to the Fusion Technology Facilities being developed as part of a £86M Government investment in fusion.

 

The Fellow will be mentored and will participate in the New Academics Programme (NAP) and help to establish a teaching programme at Harwell. The expectation is that holders of these prestigious fellowships will have identified a substantial and significant research challenge, and that this will lead to the winning of significant research funding and world leading publications as well as, preferably, impact to industry/business/society over the first 4 years of their fellowship. The research proposed should be complementary to the work undertaken currently in the School of MACE and a major objective should be the development of strong interactions with the ISIS neutron source and UKAEA to understand advanced structures for nuclear fusion reactors.
