Tenured Faculty position in Mobility and Connectivity in Advanced Power and Energy Program

  • The Henry Samueli School of Engineering - Advanced Power & Energy Program

Open December 20th, 2018 through February 18th, 2019

The Advanced Power and Energy Program at the University of California, Irvine (UC Irvine) welcomes applications from faculty candidates in mobility and connectivity.

The successful candidate will be appointed as the founding Director of the newly established “HORIBA Institute for Mobility and Connectivity (HIMaC),” and provide key leadership in the Advanced Power and Energy Program (APEP). The faculty appointment can be filled at either the Associate or Full Professor level, both of which are tenured positions. While the faculty appointment is expected to be in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, other possibilities include the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The HIMaC Director reports to the APEP Director.

The mission of HIMaC is to provide an advanced research and educational platform to address challenges associated with (1) the evolution of zero-emission vehicle and transportation systems, (2) the connectivity of the zero-emission mobility future with the electric grid, (3) the connectivity of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication and control, (4) state-of-the-art research in electrochemistry related to fuel cells, to batteries, and other energy conversion and storage technologies, and (5) interdisciplinary research and education in mobility and connectivity.

Challenges facing the evolution of the electricity and transportation sectors include (1) the development of vehicles, fuel supply chains, and mobility systems with zero-emission of greenhouse gases, short-lived climate pollutants, and criteria pollutants, (2) the connectivity of zero-emission vehicles and mobility systems with an electric grid endowed with a high-penetration of intermittent renewable wind and solar resources, and (3) the development of next generation vehicles that can sense their surroundings, engage with other vehicles, and communicate with the built-infrastructure.

Applicants are expected to have a doctoral degree from an accredited university in a relevant science or engineering discipline, and are currently employed at a university, in industry, at a national laboratory, or at a government agency. Successful candidates will be expected to develop a vigorous externally funded research program, maintain a strong publication record, advise students, provide outstanding teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and contribute their leadership and innovative thinking towards an excellent science and engineering program within the department. Successful candidates will also be expected to contribute towards a campus-wide initiative to create more field-based (off-campus) student learning opportunities with the goal of increasing the number of students (especially underrepresented minority students) pursuing graduate degrees in related programs.

Applications should include a cover letter, a description of research, teaching and service interests, including ability to contribute to departmental and interdisciplinary programs, a curriculum vitae, and the names and contact information of at least five references. References will not be contacted until later stages of consideration, in consultation with the candidate. A separate statement that addresses past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion must also be included in the application materials.

Applications must be received by February 18, 2019 to receive full consideration.
The Advanced Power and Energy Program was established in 2000 to address the generation of power, the transport and storage of energy, and the utilization of energy in both stationary and mobile (transportation) applications. While the Program is based in the Samueli School of Engineering with faculty from mechanical, civil, chemical, and electrical engineering, the transdisciplinary nature encompasses faculty from the social, physical, earth systems, and business sciences as well. The Program includes the National Fuel Cell Research Center (established in 1998 by the U.S. Department of Energy and the California Energy Commission) and the UCI Combustion Laboratory (established in 1970 with a focus on continuous combustion and spray systems).

The University of California, Irvine is part of the premier public university system in the world. UCI is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), is ranked as a top ten public university by U.S. News and World Report, and was identified by the New York Times as No. 1 among U.S. universities that do the most for low-income students.
