Assistant Professor of the chair Architectural Design and Engineering
Eindhoven University of Technology School of Architectural Design and Engineering

Job Title: Assistant Professor of the chair Architectural Design and Engineering

Faculty: Architectural Design and Engineering

Employer: Eindhoven University of Technology

The unit consists of four chairs namely, the chair of Architectural Design and Engineering, Urbanism and Urban Architecture, Rational Architecture and Architectural History and Theory.

Within all the ambitions nursed by the AUDE unit as a whole the chair ADE focuses on teaching and research with reference to the design, production and engineering of the built object. The creative tension between technical and artistic ends forms a vital impulse in architectural design, determining the expression of detail, material and structure. At the same time the resultant form of the building is hardly autonomous, it is to a large extent determined by the constructive properties, the functional requirements and scenographic possibilities of the program.

An important focus within the chair is the development of teaching and research programs specifically concerned with the "making" of architecture: how to translate an architectural concept into a tangible building.

Spatial design forms the mainstay of architectural research; at the same time the act of designing itself forms an analytical means for research; research by design thus becomes an effective tool in the exploration, evaluation and interpretation of the spatial event. The systematic exploration of the methodological scope of research by design constitutes a cherished ambition of the chair. If architectural design and its translation into materialised architectures form the basic focus of the chair ADE, its actual priorities are to place these interests within the urgent concerns of sustainable design, circularity, shifting typologies and emerging technologies and materialities as 3DCP and their influence upon the built environment.

The assistant professor will contribute both to the teaching, the research and the organisation of the chair ADE and the AUDE Unit.

As far as teaching is concerned the successful candidate will take on curricular subjects but also participate in design studio during the bachelor and master phases of the curriculum. The candidate will be expected to evaluate and renew parts of the curriculum.

With regard to research the successful candidate will be expected to initiate and contribute to the chair's ambitions with regard to research and the academic exploration of research by design. Furthermore the candidate is expected to initiate cross-over research with other Units of the faculty. The research activities will be subsumed under the research program of the Unit called "Living Cities". The assistant professor may be invited to participate in the various deliberative bodies of the unit, the faculty and the university.

The successful candidate:

Has a graduate degree in architecture;
Has completed a PhD in a subject that is relevant to this function, with a focus on the engineering part of the architectural design and/or building technologies.
Holds preferably a PhD in a subject regarding emerging technologies and novel materialities in relation to architectural design
Has demonstrated a special interest in research by design.
Has practical experience within the field of architectural design;
Has a clearly articulated view of the meaning of architectural design within both a professional and an academic context;
Has a demonstrable interest in the reciprocity of technology and design;
Has demonstrable educational skills;
Participates in a relevant academic and societal network, preferably on an international level and has relevant publications in ISI journals.
