Description

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at the University of California, San Diego invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor (also termed Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment). We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise and teaching experience in the core areas of aerospace engineering, including laboratory and design courses. Generally, teaching professors are full-time employees who are expected to teach 2 courses per quarter. In addition to demonstrating excellence in teaching, individuals in this position are expected to engage in professional activities and service related to the pedagogical mission of the department and university.

A Ph.D. degree (or advanced to candidacy) is required in the area of Engineering or a related discipline at the time of application.

LPSOE faculty are expected to do much more than excellent teaching. They have leadership responsibility, not only as teachers, but as facilitators and initiators of instructional development, curriculum design, course structure, teaching methods, new technologies, and coordinating a spectrum of teaching activities. They play a leadership role in teaching in the departments and their disciplines. Further, they provide university and public service in addition to educational leadership beyond the campus and contributions to instruction-related activities.

Candidates should demonstrate innovative teaching methodologies, potential to teach core and advanced lecture and/or laboratory courses in mechanical and/or aerospace engineering, and be highly motivated to improve the undergraduate student experience. The required job duties include teaching and mentoring of university students, curriculum development, accreditation, service activities, supervising undergraduate research, and mentoring undergraduate teams in their professional activities (e.g. Formula SAE, Design-Build-Fly and other student competitions).

A candidate for appointment, merit increase, or promotion in this series is judged by the following criteria:
• Teaching of truly exceptional quality that meets our long-term instructional needs
• Professional achievement and activity; an appointee in the L(P)SOE series is expected to maintain currency in the profession and pedagogy
• University and public service; Educational leadership in our programs and beyond the campus, plus substantial contributions to instruction-related, extra-curricular and outreach activities

Preferred candidates will have demonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, such as increasing the access and success of underrepresented students or faculty in engineering. Candidates should have a desire to participate in the School's diversity initiatives (http://www.jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/diversity/).

Rank: Assistant Teaching Professor (also termed Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment). This appointment confers membership in the Academic Senate, and, contingent upon promotion, security of employment. For more details see https://aps.ucsd.edu/_files/proc-manual/lsoe_faq.pdf

Salary: Level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications; salary based on UC pay scales and market conditions.

Closing Date: Applications received by November 15, 2019 will be given full consideration. The position will remain open until filled.

To Apply: Please submit cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching interests if applicable, a statement of research interests (optional), a statement describing past experience and/or plans to make future contributions in activities that promote diversity and inclusion. For further information about contributions to diversity statements, see http://facultydiversity.ucsd.edu/c2d/index.html and http://soeadm.ucsd.edu/ppi/academic_personnel/diversity/docs/C2D_Expectations.pdf, and the names and contact information of four to five references.
