Biofilm Processes Researcher
University of Cranfield Department of Engineering
United Kingdom

Fixed Term contract for 36 months

Location: Warden Plastics Ltd, 31, Sundon Industrial Estate, Dencora Way, Luton LU3 3HP

An exciting opportunity to work as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate has arisen as part of a 36 month KTP between Warden Plastics Ltd and Cranfield University.

This project aims to embed cutting-edge wastewater treatment knowledge and capabilities in Warden Plastics Ltd, that allows for the development of a novel biocarrier and the future development of novel wastewater treatment technologies.

Warden Plastics is dedicated to raising standards of excellence in plastic injection moulding and extrusion, established since 1957, Warden has always been at the forefront of plastic injection-moulding and extrusion, serving a diverse range of industries.

Warden Biomedia specialises in the research and development of random filter media for aeration and biological treatment plants. With the philosophy of increased surface area, the eco-friendly biological filter media are injection-moulded in recycled polypropylene with specific design features to increase the efficiency of the effluent treatment process.

As a KTP Associate, you will mainly be based at Warden Plastics but will work in conjunction with the Cranfield Water Sciences Institute (CWSI) at Cranfield University. CWSI works in all aspects of water and is recognized internationally for its research and education, attracting outstanding students, academics, sponsors and partners worldwide. CWSI activities are underpinned by world class facilities, including a pilot-plant hall at the University’s own sewage treatment works, state-of-the-art soil and water laboratories with extensive advanced analytical services.

In this role, you will assist in the development of plastic biocarriers, addressing nutrient removal from wastewater. Warden’s vision is to develop a novel commercial biocarrier/process to retrofit wastewater treatment to remove phosphorus and nitrogen and embed wastewater expertise within its core business.

You will hold a minimium of a MSc in an environmental engineering related subject and also preferably have a PhD in an environmental engineering related subject or in topic related with biological processes in wastewater treatment, preferentially on biofilm processes. This role requires knowledge of wastewater treatment and biofilm processes. Previous experience of commissioning and operation of pilot-plants, conducting and interpreting wastewater analysis in the lab using standard methods, and development of techno-economic evaluations is also essential.

This role would suit an individual with excellent research and analytical skills, ability to multi-task, enjoys working under pressure, has the ability to apply practical solutions and is a problem solver.

For an informal discussion, please contact (CU Supervisor) Dr Ana Soares, Senior Lecturer in Biological Engineering, on (T); +44 (0)1234 75 8121 or (E); a.soares@cranfield.ac.uk

At Cranfield, we value Diversity and Inclusion, and aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together harmoniously with dignity and respect and realise their full potential. We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking, and commit to exploring the possibilities for each role.

This partnership received financial support from the Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) programme. KTP aims to help businesses to improve their competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills that reside within the UK knowledge base. This successful Knowledge Transfer Partnership project, funded by UK Research and Innovation through Innovate UK, is part of the government’s Industrial Strategy.
