The Department of Chemical Engineering of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Université Laval
(Quebec City, Canada) is soliciting applications for submission to a competition for NSERC Canada Research
Chairs (Tier 1 and Tier 2).

Located in the heart of Quebec City (Canada), Université Laval is recognized for its leadership and culture
of excellence in both teaching and research.

Required profile

The Canada Research Chairs Program (CRC) aims to attract and retain some of the most accomplished and
promising researchers in the world.

For Tier 1 Research Chairs, applicants are outstanding researchers, recognized by their peers as world
leaders in their field. These chairs, tenable for seven years and renewable once, are valued at $200,000
per year and contribute to the funding of the chair holder's salary.
Nominees for Tier 1 Chair positions must be full professors or associate professors who are expected to
be promoted to the full professor level within one or two years of the nomination. Alternatively, if they
come from outside the academic sector, nominees must possess the necessary qualifications to be
appointed at these levels.

For Tier 2 Research Chairs, applicants are emerging investigators, recognized by their peers for their
potential to become leaders in their field. These chairs, tenable for five years and renewable once, are
valued at $100 000 per year and contribute to the funding of the chair holder'ssalary. An additional annual
allocation of $20,000 is also provided to support the direct costs of the research during the first five years
of the chair.

Candidates for a Tier 2 chair must have the status of assistant professor or associate professor or have the
necessary qualifications to occupy a position at this level. In addition, they must be researchers who have
been active in their field for less than 10 years at the time of nomination.
Applicants who have obtained their most advanced degree more than 10 years previously and whose careers
have been interrupted for the reasons mentioned below may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair reviewed

Description of the position and exigences

Responsibilities for this position include: teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, participation to
administrative activities, supervision of graduate students and undertaking of a strong research program in
at least one of the target areas described above.

Candidates must hold a bachelor and a doctorate in chemical engineering or in an equivalent discipline, be a
member of the Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) or eligible and undertake the necessary procedures to
become a member of OIQ, and have a good knowledge of spoken and written French. Academic as well as
industrial experience will be considered.

French is the teaching language at the University. For a non-native French speaker, the University provides
various means of learning and developing communication skills in the French language.

Selection process:

Evaluation of the applications will begin upon their receipt and will continue until the deadline. Selected
candidates will be invited to visit the department, present a chemical engineering lecture and their
research program and meet the faculty and selection committee members.
Candidates chosen by the department will be submitted for evaluation and ranking by the Faculty of
Science and Engineering (FSG), internal selection at the University level within the current CRC selection
competition and ultimately evaluation by the CRC Program. Applicants can consult the ULaval competition

timeline, as well as the evaluation criteria.
