The Opportunity

Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the  territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Department of Architectural Science  in the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science at welcomes applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor effective July 1, 2021 subject to final budgetary approval.

Architecture ?is one of three concentrations offered in the Department of Architectural Science. Integrated with Building Science and Project Management in the first three years of our undergraduate Bachelor of Architectural Science Program, students may choose to concentrate in Architecture in the final undergraduate year, and complete their education with our professional Master of Architecture program. Master of Architecture students complete an intensive thesis based on rigorous scholarly and emerging design research practices. One of only 11 professional programs accredited by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB), Ryerson engages in the strong tradition of experiential, studio-based architectural education, and focuses on three areas of interest: Global Communities, Emerging Technologies, and Sustainable Design.   

The successful candidate will be required to teach undergraduate and/or graduate design studio and lecture/seminar courses; to supervise graduate design theses; to undertake scholarly, research, and/or creative activities; and to engage in service activities. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding of the tectonic nature of buildings tempered with an understanding of architectural theory, and will have expertise in one or more of the following areas: architectural history/theory/criticism, sustainable design and/or digital design.

Candidate Qualifications

Candidates must hold a terminal professional degree in architecture (M.Arch or equivalent) OR an undergraduate professional degree in architecture with an additional degree at the graduate level. An advanced post-professional degree beyond these minimum requirements will be an asset ( i.e. a second Masters in a specialty area, a Doctoral degree, or a Post-professional Masters in Architecture.)

Professional experience in architectural practice is required; candidates will have served in leadership roles on project teams delivering architectural projects, from design through construction, on a range of project types and scales. Professional licensure in the candidate’s home jurisdiction is preferred.

In addition, the successful candidate must present evidence of: 

  1. Demonstrated capacity or potential for scholarly research or creative (SRC) activity that is current, innovative and impactful.
  2. Demonstrated capacity or potential for teaching excellence at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum and the graduate program in Architecture, as evidenced by a teaching dossier.
  3. Professional experience in architectural practice in leadership roles on project teams delivering architectural projects, from design through construction, on a range of project types and scales. Professional licensure is preferred.
  4. Demonstrated skill and experience in working collaboratively in an academic, professional or community setting.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to sustainability and the improvement of the built environment.

  • a letter of application that includes your interest in the position; what you would bring to the Department and Faculty; the impact within the built environment that you foresee for your SRC (scholarly research and creative) work (your 3-page research statement can elaborate on this); and what makes you a strong candidate overall as a researcher, educator, and community member; 
  • a current curriculum vitae providing a clear sense of your scholarly and professional development via your education and your practice and/or research activities and outcomes; your contributions to making architecture a more equitable and inclusive discipline, through committee work, community engagement, social media, and advocacy;
  • a statement discussing the significance, originality, and potential impacts of your current and developing practice in relation to your future SRC (scholarly research and creative) work (up to 3 pages); 
  • a concise digital portfolio that supports your application (50 MB maximum); in addition to design work, include up to five examples of your most significant scholarly, research and/or creative activities. This could include peer-reviewed publications, working papers, public policy contributions, presentations at academic conferences, community and professional work, juried awards for built projects and design proposals, grants, research related awards, exhibitions, and other writing or creative production that contributes to the visibility and prominence of the discipline. This material should provide evidence of your ability to establish and maintain an independent, externally funded SRC program generally consistent with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) White Paper on Assessing the Quality of Architectural Research & Scholarship (2019);
  • a teaching statement identifying your teaching philosophy and where/how your strength in teaching might enhance our Department (up to 3 pages);
  • a teaching dossier and results of teaching evaluations. These must demonstrate how you engage, encourage, and develop the learning capacity of students entering higher education from a diverse array of backgrounds, how you embed practices and principles of equity, diversity, inclusion and justice in your classroom, your assignments, and your classroom style. Teaching dossiers should include experience with course and curriculum review and/or development, examples of best practices in pedagogy, including effective use of classroom technology and any experience with experiential learning, sample syllabi, strong teaching evaluations, teaching awards, and other relevant achievements in teaching;
  • the names and email contact information of three (3) academic referees who know you, your research, teaching, and service activities, well.
