Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Next-generation Computational Materials and Devices in the Department of Mechanical Engineering


Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Next-generation Computational Materials and Devices in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (Ref.: 498925), to commence as soon as possible, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. Outstanding candidates for Professor or Associate Professor with demonstrated excellence may be considered for appointment on tenure terms.


The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers B.Eng., M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degree programmes. The University of Hong Kong has a highly ranked engineering school and an active Mechanical Engineering Programme. The Department employs about 30 full-time faculty members and has well-equipped teaching and research facilities and support. The University and the Department are building new world-class nanofabrication and characterization facilities that can strongly support the research in the captioned areas. The research environment is vibrant. Frontier research efforts are promoted and conducted in strategic areas including, but not limited to, materials and nanotechnology, advanced manufacturing, control and robotics, thermofluids, biomedical engineering, and energy and environment.  Information about the Department can be obtained at http://www.mech.hku.hk.


Fast growth of 5G, Internet of Things and artificial intelligence demands new generation of computing techniques beyond the von Neumann architecture and the CMOS hardware to manage the explosively increasing data and provide more powerful computing capability. Many fundamental breakthroughs in recent years, including brain-inspired computing, quantum computing, spintronics, just to name a few, shed light on the development of next-generation computing technologies, where new materials, new physics, and advanced fabrication capability are combined to deliver innovative device prototypes with potentials to address the grand challenges in computing.


Applicant should possess a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, such as electrical engineering, materials science and engineering, physics, etc., with an excellent research record. The appointee is expected to conduct frontier research in this broad area of developing next-generation computing technology, and to teach undergraduate as well as postgraduate courses offered by the Department.


Applicants for Professor should be a world-class researcher with a high international standing, and should possess strong academic credentials, outstanding academic leadership capabilities, extensive experience in conducting externally funded research, and a distinguished record of scholarship.


A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
