Fully Funded KESS II MSc by Research Scholarship: In-situ regeneration of spent activated carbon used for the removal of geosmin and methyl-isoborneol (MIB) in Dwr Cymru water supplies

Geosmin and methyl-isoborneol (G-MIB) are naturally occurring compounds that produce a musty, earthy smell and taste in drinking water, which if they are left in water cause customer complaints and dissatisfaction. There have been, in recent years, increased levels of G-MIB in the untreated raw water supplies which requires the water being subjected to advanced treatment using activated carbon. However, activated carbon gets saturated after several cycles of use requiring either expensive off-site regeneration before it can be reused again or expensive off-site disposal in landfills. This one-year project will evaluate the performance of advanced oxidation processes based on ozone for on-site regeneration of activated carbon. Through rapid-column studies, the project will also evaluate the feasibility of using ozone alone and in combination with activated carbon to tackle the problem of G-MIB in Dwr Cymru Welsh Water supplies and will provide a cost evaluation of the technologies studied.


Scholarships are collaborative awards with external partners including SMEs and micro companies, as well as public and third sector organisations. The scholarship provides 1 year funding with a 3 month period to complete the thesis. The achievement of a postgraduate skills development award, PSDA, is compulsory for each KESS II scholar and is based on a 40 credit award.


Academic requirements:


Candidates should have a 2.1 or above in their undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline.
