Industrial Fellow in Smart Sensors University of Birmingham, Department of Engineering United Kingdom

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,395 to £39,609. With potential progression once in post to £42,036 a year.


The Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE) is Europe’s largest academic-based group delivering railway science and education. BCRRE is lead partner in the newly-launched £92m UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN) and the University of Birmingham will also be home to one of UKRRIN’s four Centres of Excellence, the Centre of Excellence in Digital Systems (CEDS). BCRRE is appointing talented individuals to attract, propose, win and deliver projects which will realise the rail industry’s ambitions in innovation with multiple academic and industrial partners.  Academic research projects typically range from Technology Readiness Level 1 to 5 and the University is investing in expert staff to work with industrial collaborators on higher TRL projects. The postholder will develop, propose, plan and carry out research, knowledge transfer and technology transfer projects predominately under the UKRRIN banner. This post’s activities will be focussed on Smart Monitoring and Autonomous Systems; to provide expert advice, support and resource to bridge the technology transfer gap. Experience in applying for and securing funding, together with experience of carrying out industry-focussed research and development in topics including sensors, sensing technologies, condition monitoring, signal processing, embedded systems and electronic design, are essential for this role.


This is one of 4 roles which comprise key the elements of the University of Birmingham’s Centre of Excellence in Digital Systems (CEDS), offering an Industry-on-Campus environment for close collaboration towards significant R&D projects. The postholder will work closely with other members of BCRRE, industrial co-investors and industrial partners in UKRRIN to create and disseminate knowledge and work closely to propose projects, write bids and coordinate research efforts. Much time will also be spent implementing projects, including conducting original research and publishing in both academic and industrial journals, as appropriate to this specific area.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Hold, or be close to the completion of, a higher degree relevant to the research area (normally PhD) or equivalent qualifications.
  • Relevant experience in the railway industry and/or research environment related to the industry.
  • Significant knowledge of relevant aspects of the railway industry, in the UK and internationally.
  • Experience in applying for and securing funding
  • Experience of carrying out industry-focussed research and development in topics including sensors, sensing technologies, condition monitoring, signal processing, embedded systems and electronic design
  • Research and/or technology transfer experience and scholarship within subject specialism.
  • Demonstrable ability in planning, undertaking and project managing research to deliver high quality results.
  • Demonstrable ability to communicate complex information clearly, to a wide audience.
  • Demonstrable confidence in networking and proven relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to apply and/or develop and devise successful models, techniques and methods in research and innovation.
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to contribute to strategy development and planning.
