The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Technische Universität Braunschweig

invites applications for a

Junior Professor in “Space Propulsion” (W1 with Tenure Track W2)

funded by the Tenure Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States (”WISNA”) to start as soon as possible.


The professorship will be established within the Aeronautics Research Centre Niedersachsen (NFL) at the Institute of Space Systems (IRAS). The successful candidate should perform research in the following areas:

  • Reusable launch systems
  • Liquid and hybrid rocket engines
  • Innovative propulsion of satellites and probes
  • Development and test of propulsion concepts on component and system level

The junior professor shall lead the research group space propulsion and take a major role in future collaborative research programs. An extension of the research field towards electric propulsion is possible. Further, a cooperation with different institutes within the Aeronautics Research Centre Niedersachsen is encouraged. Responsibilities of the new professor include teaching of graduate students within the field of space propulsion.

The successful candidate from a university, research establishment or industry has to show proven expertise in the development and test of space propulsion systems. In-depth knowledge in material sciences, the design of space structures, combustion processes, or alternative propulsion concepts are beneficial. The ability to successfully acquire, execute, and manage interdisciplinary research projects as well as pedagogical and didactical skills are expected.

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering will provide office space, computing infrastructure, test bed and workshop resources for research and teaching.

Technische Universität Braunschweig is a member of the Science Alliance Braunschweig-Hannover. The successful candidate is expected to participate in collaborative and interdisciplinary programmes and to support co-operations among the Institutes of Technology in the State of Lower Saxony as part of the master plan MOBILISE – Mobility in Engineering and Science.

The junior professor´s initial appointment is limited to three years. After a positive evaluation, the appointment will be extended by three more years. In accordance with the tenure track statutes of TU Braunschweig, the appointment will be tenured at the level W2 after a positive final evaluation. The requirements of the position are defined in Section 30 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (Niedersächsisches Hochschulgesetz). Candidates at an early stage in their careers can apply. The Ph.D. examination should have been passed within the last four years.
