Lecturer below the Bar in Civil Engineering National University of Ireland Department of Engineering Ireland

 

Applications are invited for an appointment as Lecturer (Below the Bar) in Civil Engineering at NUI Galway.

 

The new appointee will be required to make significant contributions to the teaching and research programmes in Civil Engineering at NUI Galway. In terms of teaching, the appointee will be expected to contribute strongly to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes, student project supervision, and administration activities of the Discipline of Civil Engineering, the School and College.

t is also anticipated that the appointee will develop an outstanding research programme in Civil Engineering specialising in water and the marine, working with colleagues across the relevant academic disciplines and research institutes of the University. The appointment of a world-class individual in Sustainability and Resilience in Water and the Marine will capitalise on and strengthen NUI Galway's international leadership position in this thematic area. There will be exciting opportunities to foster the development of disruptive and smart technologies that will result in emission reductions (marine renewable energy, hydropower, bioenergy recovery, re-use of waste materials for water and wastewater treatment, and resource recovery from wastewater) and facilitate climate change adaptation and resilience (coastal protection, safe water supply, flood forecasting and prevention, surface water quality, etc.). The new appointee will be expected to attract R&D funding in fundamental and applied research areas, and to apply for major funding awards such as the SFI Investigators Programme, the European Research Council (ERC) Grant programmes, and H2020 and Horizon Europe programmes.


The successful candidate shall possess:

 

A primary degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline;
A PhD in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline;
Experience in third level teaching and the ability to deliver modules on environment/water/marine at undergraduate and graduate levels;
An appropriate publication record and research funding record;
An ability to conduct programme administration and management in a public service university environment;
Excellent communication and teamwork skills, and an ability and commitment to develop collaborative relationships with other academic staff in the pursuit of teaching and research objectives of NUI Galway;
A strong commitment to working with colleagues within existing, established research centres and groups and a willingness to develop and lead new research activity and research groupings.
A strong commitment to working with the Civil Engineering (and closely related) industry.
A commitment to contribute directly to postgraduate taught programmes, including the development of new postgraduate taught programmes.


Salary:

€37,979 p.a,- €58,944 p.a.

 

(This appointment will be made on the Lecturer below the Bar scale in line with current Government pay policy)

 

(For pre 1995 public sector entrants in Ireland, the D class Salary rates will apply)
